Just found the following model while browsing the net and what with me being a massive Pirates Of The Caribbean I can't let this one pass me by. The thing is to me is looks to be a very daunting project and I wouldn't know where to start! I have plenty of great reference material available to me in my private collection so that won't be a problem. Also how do I get the "wet" look finish on the model? Paint in matt acrylics and oils etc then apply a couple of layers of gloss varnish over the top?

This is one of the very best sculpted figures I have seen. The pictures tell a thousand words.

That's too cool! I've always wanted a decent bust of good ol' Davey! For the wet look, I would use Future acrylic floor wax. You can thin it with water and apply it in increasing ammounts until you get the desired glossyness. I just used it on a piece of mine and if you want, you can get super glossy-wet like if you apply several coats!

In short, yes.

I use gloss acrylic medium if I have to add gloss after painting, applied in very thin layers (it's a fluid type but I still water it down a lot).

What a superb piece of sculpting, a fantastic likeness of "old Fish Face".

As for the "wet look", may I suggest you try a combination of different gloss finishes, so you don't have a uniform glossiness, but a subtle range of effects which reflect the way water reflects off different surfaces. For example a glistening wet look on the skin would be different from the shiny wet leather look on his hat.

not my type but i really look forward to see this piece finished.Quite a challenge.
good luck and keep us posted.

I too am a big PoC fan, so thanks for the share I'll have to track this one down someday, can't wait to see how yours turns out.

My favorite character of the movie.
I also would go for a gloss varnish. But you should try first on a piece of plasticcard.
Painting that the same way as the figure.
Then coat it....I did it once with a coat and my colors turned out white. I don't think you are after that when you finished it...

what site did you see this beauty at?

Hi Peter!

That's is indeed a pretty cool bust and I love the Davy Jones charakter, too.
So much stuff to paint on this one!

Well, I sure would know how to start on this one. I use a special washing/layering technique for all my models.
And it worka especially well on such a bust as this Davy Jones.

If you like to know more about my way to paint such a bust, maybe you wanna come over to my personal webiste, where I have a few step-by-step tutorials with lots of pictures how I paint such a bust.
Especially my Moria Orc repaint SPS may be helpfull to you

There is a great article in one of the Kitbuliders magazine issues about painting figure of Davy Jones. If you want I can check which issue was it?
Kind Regards
Lukasz

Ok so the article was written by Dan Jorgensen and it's about painting Rocco Tartamella figure of Davey Jones. It was published in issue #59 of Kitbuilders Magazine.
Hope it will help you.
Cheers

Just had a reply from H2Creative and the busts are $75 (£47) + $12 (£7.50) shipping to the UK. Certainly not cheap but one of the best you will ever find.
