Hi everyone,I'm considering buying a daylight light, and I would like your thought's and comment's on what I should go for. Thanks Ralph

Hi Ralph, I could never get on with a daylight bulb, in the end I went back to a normal bulb and then I finish off in the kitchen
as that has the best lighting in the house. I often also look at freshly in daylight.
The bulb seemed to wash it all out to me and to cause under painting.
I hope to get a set up where I can fit my workshop out with strip lighting but at the moment I am painting from the dining room table

I used to use a daylight bulb for painting, it took a bit of getting used too. It also reduces eye strain.
I've got a Actulite, again took a bit of getting used to, but well worth it.
Still use a daylight for photography.

Hi Ralph, Ive used daylight bulbs for years. I got introduced to them in industry and modelling/painting by any other light now, seems odd by comparison!

Highly recommend Actulite, especially now that they have improved their support mechanism. Not cheap and as Graham says there is a tendency to under highlight and shade, eventually you learn to be bolder and overcome the effect of the light.

I also have a double strip light from the Daylight Company which has been very reliable and gives good light both lights are mounted by clamps onto my painting desk.

I've used an Actulite for at least 12 years without any problems.

Geoff

Like Geoff I have used an Acculite for many years, since they first appeared at Euro in fact!
Even got a spare tube with it, not used so far.
I find it gives a very good light for painting.

Ralph Maplin do a nice daylight angle poise at a very decent price .it has a magnifier at the top with the option to keep it closed with a fitted lid.
These lights work best when supplemented with natural daylight , wouldn't paint a face or horse with them on there own though ,couldn't do without it these days
but you got to pop the workpiece out from under it now and then to get a more natural estimate of things .

After careful consideration on what to go for I bought one from the RNIB. It's great I can see so much better now thank you all

Swralph, very glad you got a good light hope it does what you want it to do. What kind of light did you get?
I did like your pun, intended or not, "Bought one from the RNIB. I can see so much better now!!!!!!!!!!

Various fluorescent tubes will give different lighting effects.

Warm White- Definite yellow undertones... NFG!!
Cool White- Slight blue undertone... not as bad as above, but still makes whites hard to work with.
Daylight- Doesn't have any underlying tone but can be harsh... hence the washout mentioned above.
Pure White- these are the lamps we install at my work, especially in the surgical suites. They have no underlying tone and aren't quite as harsh as the daylight tubes. I have a bench mounted fixture (jointed arm) with a circular tube surrounding a magnifier. I found it to be a great lamp/fixture combo.
LED Bulb- These are fairly new... a cluster of LEDs mounted on a ballast and mogul base (screw in type base like a normal light bulb). I've seen them layed out in a flat or semicircular arrangement. Flat is very direct but tends to throw shadows while semicircular is more of a wash type light and doesn't tend to cast strong shadows. They are a bit pricey but they last forever.

I have an Aculite that I've had since they first brought them out which I use,but I sometimes change to a normal lamp, just to use different light sources .I know that seems odd,but I get bored easily using the same old things hence the reason I'm always changing things about my painting.Maybe I'm evolving!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!or a bored old bugger.

Hi don, I bought the adjustable task lamp with base and clamp dh156white £55 with free delivery. There was no pun intended, but see what you mean:wacky:

Jon Page at Sphere products has just taken stock of an led lamp, which I saw recently at a show. It gives off a good light, and the led bulbs will last for ages.
Not bad value for £40, I'll be picking one up to vary my lighting sources in the same way Brian does.
