Have you thought of making your own decals, the decal film is easy to come buy then you can print your design using an ink jet printer.
I've done this in the past on hgv models and they come out great.

Chris
Hi Chris.
I was looking into what you just mentioned yesterday.
But I don't have a printer.
However I've had a kind offer from a friend to do them for me when needed:).
Ralph.

Hi Ralph

Have a go at trying to draw the outline with a sharp pencil on a piece of paper in the scale you need, several attempts may be needed but it is possible. Once you have done this you can draw it on the figure or shield with a sharp soft pencil, block it in with a solid acrylic colour then you have the shape to start adding detail to.

Let me know what you are trying to achieve and I will also look through my box of scrap stencils and see if I have anything that might do the job but cant promise that would be anything there as I have not looked for several years.

I am look in now at producing the stencil sets again soon due to popular demand. I have now got my equipment back and need to get round to sorting it out once things have settled down a bit at home with Joanna.

Cheers
Tommi

Hi Tommi.
Thanks for that.
I have been practicing and I'm still crap, but who knows.
My wife has been having a go for me and well, why did I not ask her years ago..
I have nothing certain in mind yet but will probably be a roman shield.

In doing this Ralph and I would commend Chrus's suggestion
you can get great detail.
One advantage is that you can choose say a yellow lion on a red background.
Design your layout so the lion is white on red on the decal.
When you print it you just get the red part printed and apply it to a yellow painted surface.

Ralph, depending on what you're after, you could try nail decals (as in the ones used in nail boutiques).

They're available as both water-slide and rub down types and can be picked up on eBay for an absolute song. Probably no good for lions rampant and that kind of stuff, but I found some Celtic ones that I've used on a shield with decent results, so if it's something more abstract like that, they might do you. After the decals are laid, you can just paint over them to tone them down and blend them in.

Incidentally I've had the same results as you with the Andrea rub-downs. Basically when you want them to come off the backing sheet they don't, but are happy enough to come off all by themselves when you don't want them to!

Just had a quick look at nail decals and I can see that some could be used on the edges of clothing.
Great one Steve.

Hi Ralph.
Have you tried using tracing paper.
1, Trace image on to the paper.
2, Rub chalk on the reverse side of tracing paper.
3, affix tracing paper to shield / flag / whatever and re trace.
this will leave a faint chalk image of the initial image which you can go over.
