Napoleon turns the people of Bremen into French!
December 13, 1810. The great little Corsican decrees the incorporation of my hometown Bremen into the French state association.
This meant that the people of Bremen (until 1814) were real French, with the head of the department, the official French language, frogs' legs in white bread and all that and more...
And because the emperor was a careful person, he also gave the people of Bremen their new coat of arms ...:
The coat of arms shows - Napoleon loved symbols! - the Napoleonic bees above the actual Bremen coat of arms, the key ...:
After all, we became the capital of the newly created department, "Bouches de Weser"...:
But somehow (and with a lot of money) the people of Bremen managed to buy themselves out of the position of soldiers for the Gande Armée.
They later fought against the French in the Bremen-Verden regiment in the Hanover-British army near Waterloo...:
