The End Of "Led Zeppelin"!
On the night of September 24th to 25th, 1980, in the house of rock musician Jimmy Page in Windsor, Berkshire ...
... died heavily drunk by suffocating on his own vomit the drummer of the band "Led Zeppelin", John Henry "Bonzo" Bonham ...:
To this day Bonham is considered one of the best drummers ever - in 2011, more than 30 years after his death, the readers of the rock music magazine "Rolling Stone" voted him the "Best Drummer of all Times" by a large majority. !
Since 1968 Bonham - like Paige, in whose house he died - belonged to the rock formation "Led Zeppelin", one of the best bands of all time ...:
Bonham had arrived because rehearsals for the group's planned new tour were due to begin the following day.
Bonham had been addicted to alcohol and drugs for years and, as a result, showed increasing signs of physical decline - the concert in Nuremberg Exhibition Center on June 27, 1980 ...
... had to be stopped prematurely after only three songs, because drummer Bonham (shortly after the next picture was taken) collapsed while playing ...:
The performance in the Berlin Einssporthalle on July 7, 1980 ...
... should be the last "Led Zeppelin" concert for the time being - and the last that "Bonzo" Bonham experienced ...:
Because the remaining band members, singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones came to the conviction that they could not fill the hole that the death of Bonham had torn - and on December 4, 1980 they announced the dissolution of "Led Zeppelin"!
In the run-up to this decision, the musicians were put under massive pressure by their record company "Atlantic Records" (which had previously made a lot of money with "Led Zeppelin") to continue with a replacement for Bonham - but Plant, Page and Jones successfully withstood the pressures.
Since July 7, 1980, the musicians have only performed together twice - and both times for free and for a good cause:
In 1985 the remaining Led Zeppelin band members appeared as "Plant, Page and Jones" with Phil Collins on drums at Live Aid ...:
The gig was a disaster!
John Paul Jones arrived so late that the band only had an hour to rehearse. In addition, Robert Plant had vocal problems due to overload.
The musicians were so dissatisfied with the quality of their performance that they refused to give their consent to the release of the corresponding film material as part of the official 4-DVD set Live Aid, which was released in 2004.
Instead, they donated a large sum of money out of their own pocket for aid to Sudan.
In May 1988 they then appeared on the 40th anniversary of their former record company "Atlantic Records".
Jason Bonham, son of the late "Bonzo" Bonham, was on the drums ...
Of course, you can't write about music without PLAYING music too!
I picked out one of the most famous songs from "Led Zeppelin" - which I like a lot. This one...:
