Thanks Paul, fingers crossed! I'm a bit nervous about removing the framework and I'll have a lot of cleaning up to do on the lower base, glad I used a cheap block of beech!

This is interesting. Looking forward to the next step. Thanks for sharing. I want to try some water effects also

Dee
I'm still wary about unpacking it! I'd encourage you to have a go though, it's much easier than it seems. As long as you're water-tight (unlike me) then it's a doddle, the pebeo resin was very easy to use.

Thanks... I am going to try it. I have in the past but found the 'water' to leak from the frame. Then I tried painter's tape but it bowed in. I tried to put painters tape around the base but it did leak. Then tried it again to put wood pieces like tongue depressors around it and not too successful. I am afraid to try it on a good base, it might wreck the finish. I may have no choice. But still interested very much once you take the frame work off. Good luck

Jim.. .OK.. I started tonight to play with water. You have peaked my interest to try again. Your photos have been most helpful. I also found something on Reaper about water and the walls, it's very similar to what you are doing. Going to keep popping in to see your progress.

It turns out that plasticard adheres incredibly well to resin! Took me an hour or so of careful cutting and carving to get to this. I'll do the other faces over the next few days then get some really fine-grit sandpaper to finish it off and smooth it up.

It looks good. I was not successful at all. When I came into my workroom today.. resin was all over my counter... But.. I am going to keep trying. Looking forward to watching more of your progress

Hey Pete, Yes... I think of course it was from the corners. I just cannot build a good barrier. I used plasticard.. Everygreen and tape. I may go back to the other method i did for the Cpt. Ahab base... is use painters tape as a barrier and place wood behind it since it caved in the walls if it was just tape. I am not going to give up... been reading a lot and some people keep at it and spend some time and $$ to get it just right... ugh

Nice to follow your experiment. The top edge looks nicely straight.
That sanding sounds challenging. Will be a lot of work polishing four sides.
good luck!

Cheers,
Adrian

The beejeesus should make it absolutely tickety boo

I can't wait to see it revealed now, fingers crossed just a little bit for you.

Paul.

No problem mate. The wood of the plinth was covered in packing tape then the plasticard walls were stuck to the tape with contact adhesive (this is where I got a couple of leaks). The vertical seams at each corner were super glued at first, then, when that was dry, I ran standard plastic glue down each one so the plasticard would melt then bond tightly. I then ran putty down each seam to be sure! With hindsight, I should've ensured that the bottom of each plate was watertight a little more, but we live and learn!

Thank you so much. I am going to try your way. I don't like the idea of having to sand it afterwards. I will go back to earlier posts and see what
kind of resin/water you used. I used Woodland Scenic, the railroad water. I think it was too thick, it never set up. So I ended up scraping it off the
base. I am using a good wooden base... so it's stained and sealed. I think thats pretty risky, but want to try. I did not seal all my corners and everything as you have done. This second try contained the resin/water, it just didn't dry. Will try something else. Thanks again... you sbs here keeps wanting me to keep trying and not give up . Thank you

Just keep sanding the resin up to 2000 grit. Use the sandpaper wet too then you can see how well the scratches are going. Once happy with that give it a coat of gloss varnish will make it completely clear again. Wish I knew when you started this as I would've advised to use some gloss varnish to go round the barrier where it joins to the base, blutac on the outside joins (which you did after a leak anyway), and rubbing a tiny amount of vasaleen on the plasticard to make it easier to remove. Maybe double sided tape next time instead of the contact adhesive too ;)

This will look amazing though, especially with how you've done the koi.
