I wasn't sure howmany were aware that Dettol disinfectant could strip acrylic paint from plastic figures.
See vid.

Gunk green also works and doesn't smell half as much, it smells like washing up liquid. It's a degreaser and you can get it from a car shop in the UK. It's particularly good on acrylic paint but takes a bit longer on halfords primer. I managed to strip the acrylic and keep the primer intact. The primer wore off in a few places but didn't flake or peel so after another quick coat it was as good as before. The acrylic came straight off so I imagine anything on top would come off with it.

Sorry Martin, not meaning to de rail mate, just an alternative to dettol, always reminds me of when I was ill as a kid :)

I had an idea most of you would have heard of the idea, but as it's a very long time since I did anything with plastic figure, it was new to me By the way it also worked on metal and it's safer than Nitromors!! :) I'll have a look out for that Gunk Green, Graham I assume it's safe for resin?

Martin

Dettol stripped off white enamel primer and undercoats of blue and black enamel on a Metal Modeles 54mm Garde Grenadier for me. Overnight soak, came off clean as a whistle under the tap. I've found Nitromors to be a bit hit-and-miss, plus....it's a hazard.
Haven't tried Dettol on any resin figures yet.
Years back, we used to dilute sugar soap crystals with warm water for stripping oils and enamels off Historex plastic....didn't harm the surface at all. Guessing that would work on resin reasonably well.

Rightly or wrongly,.. I have always used 'Cellulose Thinners', with some old rough cut down brushes. Usually with white metal or resin. (Not plastic). 10mins of scrubbing and job done. To date I have seen no adverse effects on the detail of any given piece.

Believe me when I say that I am the original alternative 'Hardened Stripper'. .. The 'Chippendales', Phah, light-weights in comparison.:D

I truly believe that I have spent more time stripping figures, than actually painting the buggers! ... which is slightly disconcerting. :(

Many moons ago, I was stripping models with nitromors, got too enthusiastic with the tooth brush, got it in both eyes.
That was a lively half hour.

You should try 'Chilli', on the 'Willy', yet another example of not concentrating on what substance is in the hand.:arghh: ... Talk about latent Latin dance moves I never knew I had. Maybe I will try it on figures, one never knows.:D

Mark

Hi Martin

Never tried this ...will do it might stop me drinking it instead !

How long do you leave it in ?

Some interesting info on this thread..never heard of Green Gunk though

Nap

Nap, I put some in a sealable clear container, and within half an hour you could see ribbons of old paint. I kept testing it and different colours took longer, over night for black. It made my worksop smell like a hospital, but that's better than it usually smells! :) I'd never heard of Green Gunk either and my son is a mechanic!

Hi All,
Here is a resin figure I bought second hand, it was primed and painted with enamels and oils. A soak overnight in Dettol was just the job. You can also filter it and reuse it and when picking the pieces out any scalpel cuts on the fingers get a clean.:) Also it does not harm the resin.
cheers
Richie
