This is the first of a set of ten new figures from Mitches Military Models. Painted figures by Gordon Mitchell.

These resin figures have been beautifully sculpted and cast by Maurice Corry. They depict drummers of the 57th (West Middlesex) regiment of foot and are based on the famous Lady Butler painting 'steady the drums and fifes'. The original painting shows the drummers and fifers formed up on the regiments right flank defiantly facing the French at the battle of Albuera during the Peninsular campaign. The unit suffered heavy casualties during this engagement including the colonel who, mortally wounded, had called out to his men 'Die hard the 57th' earning their nickname - 'The Diehards'.

The review figures sent to me were both supplied wrapped in bubble wrap in a sturdy cardboard box with a historical note sheets. Each figure is 120mm in scale and all parts are cast in light cream resin.

The first figure in the set has ten pieces and the second having eleven resin cast pieces. A close inspection of the parts of both kits shows the level of detail and casting that we come to expect from Maurice Corry. We can see that the parts are cleanly cast with only the mould blocks to be removed from each part.

A close inspection of facial detail and head wear, the red line depicts the cutting point of the mould block.

Front and rear views of the main torso of the figure, the upper an lower sections are cast in one piece, detail in the casting is good, there are a few small mould blocks to remove. We can also see the location and positioning of the head.

The boots are a flat fit against the bottom of the legs once the blocks are removed. The red lined depict the cut off point of the mould blocks.

Both arms and hands are one piece castings, small mould blocks need to be removed, close up we can see the quality in the regimental features in the casting.

As the figures are quite similar in quality and number of parts I will show detailed images of the second figure below.

Conclusion:

These initial figures will make great stand alone or vignette kits. There is also an option for the modeller to use alternate colour schemes in order to represent other units. The general rule for infantry drummers was to wear reverse colours i.e. the tunic would be the facing colour of the regiment and would be adorned with its unique lace design. These uniforms were designed to make the drummers stand out and will therefore make colourful additions to any British Napoleonic collection.

The casting and level of detail is as good as most other resin cast figures in the market place of this scale. The usual mould blocks to remove and sanded. Great work again from Maurice Corry and Gordon Mitchell for marketing these through his web site.

Look out in the next few weeks for additional figures to add to the range. Highly recommended.

I've got the first figure (arms folded) and can fully endorse everything Tommi has said. The 3rd & 4th figures (drummer boy & sergeant) are now available from Gordon's ebay shop & I think I'll do these with the first as a small 3 figure vignete; I'm not sure I want to paint 8 or 9 musicians but you never know!

I'm sure Gordon will announce these properly but he has placed a complete set of castings of all the figures on ebay uk. His ebay id is aspatriabruce. The boxed set includes some historical references and a postcard size copy of the original painting by Lady Butler.
There is also to be a cast resin base available shortly and this measures just over 12" by 6".
I received all of these earlier this week; superb!

anybody have a picture of the rear of the drummer with his arms folded? my kit had no sword strap included in it and I'd like to see how it is supposed to attach. Obviously i'm not familiar with this era of soldiers as I am mainly a WWII guy but I have this figure as a commission so I need a little help. Thank you in advance.
