WIP Critique Digi camo.

This the third attempt, does it need a darker brown, are the shapes the right size scale wise? As I'm not sure how many colours make this up. What I do know is it's a pain to recreate. Macro doesn't help either.

Well,not trying to be critical of your paint.......but those pixels are way too large. Base color looks good and the dark brown is about right,but the dark brown is not as prevalent in the pattern...probably the least of all. It may look better after some fading washes,but the pixels just seem too large. (And it makes me very uncomfortable criticizing any other paint....I live in a large glass house!)

Which camo are you recreating Carl? It does look way larger in scale than what I was expecting (where the individual blocks are maybe 4mm across).

Carl....Man,you can do the digital...you have the shape and idea down....you just gotta think a tiny bit smaller.

Hi Carl, I had a go at that bust not to long ago myself. I think your on to something with the general idea of the shapes, however as others have said before it needs to be done much smaller and you should "incorporate" floating pixels of just one or two on the field of camo also- they should look like "extensions" of the main bodies of color camo. I hope this made sense- have a look at my version to see what I mean.

Very nice Scott. What size should I be aiming for with the individual pixels, hard to judge from the photos. Also what colours did you use if it's acrylics? I've gone for a deck tan, darkened twice with chocolate brown.

Hi Carl-I just tryed to paint them as small as I could, but still maintain a "squareness" to them. All the shapes should be geometric in nature and the individual pixels should just be extensions of the larger masses. Some should be alone in the field and some on top of the other colors of camo. This camo is truly a pain in the A** to paint but you really don't need to follow any shape rules like you would with the woodland camo or something like oakleaf. Just make sure it is all geometric. My version is still probably to big for the true camo, but you can fool the eyes into thinking its the real thing by keeping it defined and squared off. As for colors I used 3. Deck tan was the base and the 3 camos got progressively darker with amounts of Khaki and lastly Chocolate brown I think also. But deck tan was used in the mix of each to maintain color harmony and after done I airbrushed a highly diluted mix of the base deck tan to tone all the colors down and give a weathered look.

Hey Carl,

I am no expert of camo and always base my decison to like something on the look of it, rather than accurcacy. As such I am very, very fond of your work at this stage.

All the best with this task! It is extremely challenging to me. I shall never tackle modern camo. The thought of painitng a PRC tank with fancy camo (not unlike what's being discussed here) baffles me a lot.

I always go for the "suggestion" of what I am trying to paint. I am not good enough to recreate DPM or a SS pattern, but on first inspection- it looks near enough.

In reality it is probably to small to paint!

Scott's advice is spot on! I have seen his excellent bust a few times in person now, and the camo is absolutely stunning on it.

Much better Carl, better size for sure. I see some random pixels, just be sure to connect 2, 3, 5 and so forth of them. The shapes your looking for reminds me of "stairs". Keep it looking random and after you clean up the "masses" by squaring them off more you will have it I think.
Believe me once your done and happy with the camo it is a very satisfying, and you will never want to do it again (just kidding). Look forward to your progress-
