We are very fortunate to be showing a selection of Shepard Paine dioramas at WASMEx (Western Australian Scale Model Expo) this year. They were bought by a local private collector and are being put on public display for the first time. I can't wait to get up close and look at the master's works in person .

Thanks for showing these pics John. They are a great reminder of the "old school" dioramas that inspired so many of us to get involved in miniature figures.

could you share some pictures ? If allowed, from the show

And perhaps also Norman Abbey, press gang, figures sculpted by Sanderson, Greenwood & Ball, picture from Mil Modelling

Those dioramas by Norman Abbey were great. The Zulu War diorama he did using the Hinchliffe figures is still in the South Wales Borderers Regimental Museum.

I have seen the diorama above and again it is a depiction of a sad ugly chapter in American history and is hard to look at. It to me in some ways is good counter point to models of heroes of the South like Nathan Bedford Forrest. Who founded the KKK.

Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves
Blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees
Pastoral scene of the gallant south
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth
The scent of magnolia sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh
Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck
for the rain to gather
for the wind to suck
for the sun to rot
for the tree to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop
Composed by Abel Meeropol (aka Lewis Allan)
Originally sung by: Billie Holiday

when I was a kid, I would get a toy plastic tank/truck, which were very cheap but were packaged in a box with a battle scene printed on it. when you took the toy out of the box, it lost some of its appeal as it was just a plastic toy. it was the box which gave it appeal. I think this was my first diorama interest. to me a diorama is a 3d scene which when well done is very attractive to the eye.

Great diodrama and pic.If I could view this diodrama from only one angle this would be it..it really says it all.I especially like the tenderness shown by the rider to his horse.
