About Donna J NEARY
Throughout her career artist Donna J. Neary has moved easily between painting portraits, book and magazine covers, commercial illustration, children's books, military subjects, and complex historical paintings often requiring years of research.
The artist's work has appeared on the covers of numerous books and national magazines such as the Washington Post Magazine, The New Republic, The U.S. Naval Institute's Proceedings, Common Cause magazine, Leatherneckmagazine, America's Civil War, the Marine Corps Gazette (over 25 covers), and many others. She painted several award winning covers for both Regardie's magazine and Mortgage Banking magazine, and has illustrated articles in Smithsonian and Washingtonian magazines. Her art appears in the Time-Life Books Civil War book series Echoes of Glory and in their Enchanted World book series, as well as in Boston Publishing's Vietnam Experiencebook series. The 1994 Official White House Christmas Ornament carries her art, and her painting Even To Hell Itself is the official painting for the North Anna Battlefield Park near Richmond, Virginia. In 1973 Donna was elected a Fellow of the Company of Military Historians for her accurate depictions of early military subjects. Her many trips to the U.K. and to Europe in the 1970's and 80's to do research generated interest in her art, which has been published in both British and American military journals and periodicals. Paintings by Donna J. Neary hang in the Pentagon and the Commandant's House in Washington D. C. and her art resides in the collections of the U.S. Cavalry Museum, the U. S. Army Medical Museum, the National Park Service, Regardie's Magazine, The National Guard Bureau's Heritage Collection, The Marine Corps Association, The U. S. Navy, the National Museum of the Marine Corps,The Scots Guards and the Queen's Own Highlanders in the UK, as well as other public and private collections in both the U.S. and Great Britain.
While pursuing her career as a free-lance artist, Donna also served as a Field and Combat Artist in the United States Marine Corps Reserve for over 22 years. Her many assignments with the Marine Corps sent her to the far corners of the globe, including the remote mountains of South Korea, several assignments north of the Arctic Circle, and in 1993 to Civil War torn Somalia on the Horn of Africa. She has received the Colonel John W. Thomason Jr. Award, the Combat Correspondent's Distinguished Performance Award, and has twice received the Navy Commendation Medal. A large body of artworks by the artist, ranging from field sketches to large oil paintings, reside in the Art Collection of the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
