I am looking to depict both fresh and dried blood on a shield. Any suggestions for realistic oil mixes or single colors that might do the trick. I tried different reds mixed with black but not really liking it.

Blood is from red trough black.
Fresh blood is red, and because it is wet you have don't paint it matt.
Older blood is matt, and turns from a dark brown to really old dryed what is black with a little red in it.
So, you have to mix them.

I think Marc is spot on. I use Raw Umber and Cad red to mix for blood. More Umber for the older and darker stains that I want, more reds for the newer and fresher blood. Just a tiny bit of practice should get you there. I tend to ere on the side of "sparing" when applying blood, less is more for me, but that's up to you and your tastes. Good luck!

There are a few prior threads in Painting with blood in the title, two of them started by you ;)

really? Because I did a search using "blood" as the search word and after 7 pages only found one relevant post, and that was based on tamiya transparent colors. Or maybe I am just blind LOL

...next time I will us the advanced search option :)
That's what it's for (y)

It's so much better - searching within one forum, in thread titles only, getting returns as posts rather than threads, looking for posts by specific members, these can really help winnow out the chaff even before you try combinations.

Even on smaller forums it's still easy to get overwhelmed when you look for a common term and pF now has upwards of a quarter million threads - just tried a general search for the word blood and got 454 returns! Search for it in thread titles and this is already pared down to 24, search for it in titles within Painting only and you get only six... which includes this one :)
