Gary, great work so far, looking forward to following this informative thread to the finish.
Many thanks for showing.

Cheers Ken

Superb! Looking forward to seeing the rest of the child's facial features emerge!

For the drum - just a suggestion - maybe a screwy one. My grand-daughter has one of those plastic block shapes thingies - square, cylinder, star, triangle, etc. At 100mm maybe you could find a cylinder and then cut it to length. If the full scale rope tension drum has a typical 16 inch diameter head, that would make it not quite 24 mm. I've found an ad for a drum maker that may be useful. http://www.cooperman.com/ropedrums/revwar.htm

All the best,
Dan

Guys, Thanks again for all your comments. I choose this subjects for many reasons. A few being that it was a fiarly simple subject where I could concentrate more on the figure's proportions and the uniform. Another is that Civil war musicians are rarely done in miniature, especially as commercial pieces.

I sure appreciate any and all suggestions in regards to the drum. My goal is to build one that goes not only with 100mm figures but 1/16 as well. That's the big problem with building weapons and equipment for "MM" size figures.

One part of the challenge faced is not so much sculpting the drum, given Garys skill level, should be relatively easy, just a bit fiddly with details.

This is to be cast up, and doing the drum as a big solid mass is going to be a challenge downstream from the process, as it would be a fairly solid lump of resin. (attachment issues, throwing off the balance of the figure, extra resin usage which could have been avoided)

Thinking about it, it may be broken down in a few ways. cast it in two halves (they don't have to be symmetrical though) similar to how Easter eggs are moulded, with two discs for the skin on top and bottom of the drum (the flat surfaces), as two discs would help hide a seam line where the two parts join.

Or perhaps as a cylinder, hollow cast, just add a bottom plate.

The sculpting will be simple for Gary (am looking forward to his SBS on it) just that Gary has to think three steps ahead on this.

Hope this helps,

Cheers

Really nice Gary, childrens features as you know are among the most difficult to capture, realistically. You did it.

Here are some images showing the crown of the kepi almost complete. The folds will be carved or worked in with mini files. The plastic visor is held in place with Blu Tac.

This photo shows the jacket front almost ready for buttons, the position of which have been roughly marked out. The most interesting aspect of the original image, and I did not catch it at first is that it is reversed. I believe the actual image is a tin type which explains why. Check out the following image and link to find out more.

superb!

the ACW is not a subject i've ever modeled but this looks very tempting and would be a fun painting exercise

:)

a suggestion for the drum.... cast it as a hollow piece with two plastic card discs ( laser cut?? ) for the drum skins... that should solve the weight issue

Looking great, Gary. It's hard to tell from the pics, but if the kepi were a little bigger, it might help emphasize his youth. Just a thought...

Thanks Matt. That's just the basic shape. There's lots more to do. So the kepi will be larger, but not to where it makes the figure look cartoony. ~Gary

A quickie update on the drummer. Besides some uniform details the only major pieces left are the arms and drum.

The drum is the only major hurdle left. I'm still playing around with a few engineering options.
