Hi Guys,

Im just wondering if any of you have any hints or tips about depicting dusty tarmac on a base?

I am working on my National Serviceman figure and need to represent a section of road in 120mm scale I am struggling to think of an in-scale solution..!

Hi Steve,
If you can get to the model exhibition at the college in Poynton Cheshire at the weekend, I have some pale weathering powders you are welcome to use and let me have back at Bolton or Crewe show.
Or if you want a set for yourself.....

Thanks guys, Ill give it a try - I cant make Poynton, Paul, but many thanks for the offer! Ive got a box full of pastels from my artschool days, Ill dig em out!(y)

Have you thought of using dark emery cloth/paper glued to the base? I recall seeing it used very effectively on street dioramas and aircraft models. It can still be weathered down,if required, and comes in different grades.

If there are cracks in the tramcars or at the edge the dust would accumulate there and be lighter rather than darker. This is a bit like tyres and tracks on vehicles where dirt gets moved away from those surfaces that touch the road - don't think of mud though that's a different topic!

Cheers
