Currently painting my second ever bust, almost finished however the face is causing me the most problems, need to add in much more shadow tones and perhaps tidy up the highlights a little.

Any tips on painting faces and "blending" acrylics are most welcome.

Looks quite good.Check out Diego Ruina's world expo 2011 tutorial on the current PF threads.Highly informative and with a tecnique not so difficult to master.

Oda.

I think this looks good.Looking at the pic;it looks like you have reached the same sticking point that I reach on almost every face I do.I try to bring it up slowly so as to have nice transitions of color blending and then stall out at the point of good enough or not good enough. It's as if the whole face just needs a slightly darker wash but I'm afraid of screwing it up.I don't have a consistent answer yet because each piece is an adventure to try different things.Curious to see what you do with yours.Keep up the good work.

Wayne
P.S......I also use acrylics and always experimenting with oils

You're doing a great job so far!

Painting faces and smooth blends with acrylics are two of the most challenging aspects of painting figures (assuming you're using acrylics ;)). I'm in the process of painting a 54mm figure, and I'm doing a step by step about it here. The last part covered the eyes, and the next part is going to cover the rest of the face. I'm going to try to cover everything in as comprehensive fashion as I can - determining skin tones, blending, fine details, hair, etc... all in acrylics. Unlike a bust, the faces at 54mm are pretty small, and in this figures case smaller than usual, so it should be quite a challenge. It should be posted within the next couple of days. Hopefully you may find something helpful :)

Phil

Hi Oda,
I looked for the Diego Ruina tutorial under the "figure show" forum but that appears to go back only to 2012. Any thoughts on another way of accessing it?
Thanks
Liam

The 'Articles' section has an excellent S.B.S. by Fernando Ruiz which deals with the face in detail.
For a slightly smaller scale, the same section has another S.B.S. by Jaume Ortiz on painting faces in acrylics.

Cheers,
Andrew
