Guy, Though I do not own a casting of this figure, it's one of the best (my opinion) 54's I've seen. The proportions and drapery are fantastic. It's figures like this that almost paint themselves. Nice job. Mr. Burton's :) sound advice has paid off.~Gary

Thanks Gary,
I agree with you......it is one of the best sculpted figures I have done in years. I guess I will never live down referring to Joe Hudson as Joe Burton

A very good friend of mine who lives in Salisbury, Maryland, is named Joe Burton and he also paints miniatures. Hense, my constant screw-up with names.....I'll just have to try harder. Sorry Joe :(

Guy

Thanks Julie,
With the pictures I have taken before, I would say it is the bloody person taking the pics. I have had some trials in taking pic and getting close enough to see any detail. Hopefully there is room for improvement.

Hey Guy,

I think it is the talent in the person who doing the painting! I think that Mr Burton would not get to upset for being confused with me!

Joe

Hello Joe,

My good friend Joe, from Salisbury, stops in pf (just can't get him to register) and has ragged me since I made that post calling you, by his name. Needless to say, when he calls on the phone, I still hear about it......Oh well.....no fool...no fun

Guy

Hey Guy,

I was at MFCA about 3 years ago and this guy came up to me and started talking like he knew me, well he did but he had me confused with another Joe and not until after the show did it dawn on him that I was not the Joe he was thinking about.

I guess I am generic!

Joe

Guy,

Perhaps it's around here and I missed it, but could you, or Joe, explain the flat coat thing. Is it an acrylic flat coat then oils on top for the stripes? I'm about to attempt this sort of thing for the first time and need some suggestions as how to best do it. I'll be using oils.

Hi Shane,

Using the Celtic warrior as an example, I did the light tan color over the entire area of the trousers, blended and shaded as though it were the only color they would be and after this was thoroughly dry, applied a coat of Poly-S flat coat acrylic. (I don't think the brand makes a difference as long as a flat coat). The next day I proceeded to paint the stripes and as I ran too far one way or the other with the first (and the rest) green stripe the prior flat coat over the tan allowed me to take (already ready ) a brush with thinner and swipe into the green if the stripe got out of line and therefore keep the stripes even. It took me aabout 5 hours (with a few smoke breaks added in) to lay out the stripes having to use the clean brush with thinner several times to keep the stripes even. I used Floquil bottled enamel for all the colors. A couple of times the green would "bleed" into the tan (where I didn't want it) and with the flat coat there, allowed me to move the green back into where I wanted it without leaving any stain on the tan.

Hope this explains the process. The main thing was to Take your time There is no rush to finish it by any certain time on the clock. I actually forced myself to slow down and several times cleaned my brush to keep it from drying in the ferral.

Any questions.......ask away.

Shane,

Guy hit the nail on the head. I have painted both oils and the acrylics. When I use the oils I put the base on then cook it in a crock pot, seal it with the acrylic flat coat then add stripes in which ever direction, cook again then flat coat and so on. It takes a while but I think this is well worth it. I thought that I did a decent job this way and there is no arguing by what Mr. Guy Has done! The pictures speak for themselves. Any questions just ask. FWIW if you go to the site where I was doing the golf figure there are several examples and in the gallery as well.

BTW what are you going to paint?

Joe

Thanks guys,

It occurred to me the other day that I haven't picked up a brush in almost a year. Yikes! I've never painted anything complicated like what I'm about to start.

Here in the next few days I'll be getting a pre-production casting from John Lea of an ancient Celt I've sculpted. The debate is still going as to the best interpretation of the artifacts, but I’ll probably be trying to duplicate an embroidery or fabric stitched onto the surface. I hope my skills are up to the task. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

G'mornin Shane,

The best advice I could give you is to "Take Your Time" and plan the design you wish to paint thoroughly. I am excited to see the progress that you will make in your painting project and please post some photos as you progress with the figure.

Guy

I tend to approach every painting project with a bit of impending doom ; )

Shane,

I know what you mean. I think about how I want it to look and then once it starts I feel like I should have found another hobby but then I have moments that I am happy with it. I can never figure it out but I still love to look at everyone's figures and this is what keeps me coming back for more punishment.

Joe

I have swung back to the Celt and have done the sheild design after alot of surfing through show pics that are posted. The center plate will be brass after the desogn dries. The sheild is superglued to a blunt tooth pick and fastened to the back side of the sheild. This will be below his hand on the reverse side and can easily be touched up afterwards.

Sorry for the delay, I have been doing some re-organization with paint area and have just gotten back to the brushes. I started the 2nd Celt today to go with the Elite Celt. This one is a Time Machine Celt and will be mounted with the Elite. The base is almost done and awaits both Celts.
