Just completed my latest project, this is a resin bust of horatio nelson sculpted by david greive back in 2005 to comemrorate the 200th anniversarry of the battle of trafalgar 1805,the sculpt is awesome, the details mr greive has brought to this piece is outstanding and it was a pure pleasure to paint, the detail has to be seen to be believed.
There is minimal clean up required, just a single mold line accross the top of the head and running down the neck which was easily removed with some wet/dry paper and needle file,i did'nt use any filler as the kit comes in just 2x parts being the body and pedestal.
The kit is produced with nelson wearing his full dress uniform which i researched was not worn at trafalgar where he died, however nelsons orders and decorations are sculpted onto the piece which consist of the (Order of the bath / Order of the cresent / Order of st ferdinand / Cross of St joachim ),the bust also has the 2x sahes consisting of the Order of the bath which was crimson silk and underneath the Order of st Ferdinand which was pale blue/green silk with cream edging, also present are the 2x medals awarded for the victories at Cape st vincent / Abouker bay - Nile.
I researched the figure having visited the national maritime museum in greenwich some months ago and having visited HMS Victory on numerous occasions, both of these attractions well worth a visit - highly recomended.
Before i move onto the painting of the piece the first thing i would like to mention is the colour of nelsons eye colour,i recieved a lttle critisism over the last bust i completed of napoleons eye colour, having spoken to one of the curators at greenwich and read in numerous books as well as first hand accounts aboard HMS Victory at the time of trafalgar, nelsons eyes wer'e dark blue grey in colour, this also included the right eye which suffered some damage at calvi in 1794,the injury was barely noticable although some first hand accounts say it had an appearance of a pale milky film over the eye, other than that the eye seemed normal in apperance,he was never known to have worn an eye patch either.
Priming of the bust was completed using GW chaos black and once dry the appropriate GW under colours were applied and left to dry.
All gold and silver was completed using the andrea gold and silver paint sets, this was the first time i had used these and i'm reasonably pleased with the result,i think its just a matter of playing arround with these paints to get the best out of them.
Nelson was known to have been a quite a nervous person in his youth and early adult life with experts putting his grey hair down to this condition,i achieved the white/greyish hair colour with mixes of tittanium white with small amounts of charcoal grey and umber being added for the shadow areas and more white for the highlight areas.
I under painted the coat in GW regal blue with about 20% of black added, once dry i used Windsor blue mixed with black for the main coat colour, highlights were achieved by mixing Cellulan blue and Cadmium yellow together to obtain a blue/green colour with white added to lighten, deep shadows were achieved using blue-black.
To finish up i would like to say i would recomend this piece to anyone interested in the napoleonic wars,no collection would be completed without nelson in it i feel.

Please forward all eye critisism to the National Maratime Museum (only joking),all critisism and coments welcome and thanks for taking the time to look :)

Hi Brian,
nice work matey, the full figure is very nice too, a jot better than the Hussar David did.
It took a lot of nagging to get David to try resin, then he wished he had years back.
Best Regards

Many thanks paul for your kind coments,i cant believe he did'nt fancy resin, when i think back to some of the other excellent pieces he sculpted i think they would have looked great in resin.

Ha ha,i knew you would come up with something about the photo's mate ,as i told dave i intialy put them on as full images then changed my mind to thumbnails and instaed of one replacing the other it kept adding them, this wont be the last i hear about this .
Thanks for your kind words ron,the red sash was achieved by base coating inGW blood red and finished in oils with red lightened with some orange and flesh for the highlights and venetian red + indian red for the medium value and the same value with some windsor blue added for the dark areas.
I will send you some photo's if you like :ROFLMAO::LOL:,(only joking mate).

Take care / Brian

Lovely job Brian, the metals look really well.
Carl.(y)
Thanks carl,i would'nt say i'm 100% happy with the metalic paints but i'll play arround with them abit and see how i feel,it's a grey area for me painting gold and lace,i just keep experimenting with different things until i feel happy, the reason why i chose these carl was because of their quick drying time which allowed me to complete more painting in one session instead of waiting until the next day for the inks to dry.

Brian

,
Have you tried Stu Hale's printers inks Brian? They dry very quick.
Carl.(y)
Hi mate, yes i have some of stuart's inks and i like them alot but they dont dry as quick as the andrea ones,i'm just an impatient painter carl,i'll keep using different mediums till i find a style that suits me,(y)

Hello Brian, Excellent paint job. I had a chance last September while on a trip to England to see Lord Nelsons Tunic on display at The National Maratime Museum in Greenwich. You have done a great representation here.(y)
