I see that the figures in the distance are Jewish prisoners, but what's the context of the main room? It's hard to tell from the picture.

I believe it is the following.
A German (SS, or similar) having troubles to sleep. When he sit's right up in his bed he see the ghost's of the jewish prisoners he sended to dead.
It could be that he is in a jail.

Marc

He is a prisoner at the Nuremberg jails in 1946 waiting probably to be jugded for his crimes, and he is "visited" in his sleep by the souls of his victims,he can't sleep because of his nightmares.I don't know the religion of the ghosts.

My understanding was that it was a prisoner ( military or Political ) during the Nurnburgh trials. He is sitting in his cell perhaps after the days trial, and thinking of the huge numbers of Jews he had sent to their death.
Overall a wonderful piece, thought provoking but beautifully presented.
First viewing I didnt see the family and had to go back to see it. I am very glad I had that second visit.

Thank you for all your comments. The title of the diorama was in fact "Some Had Nightmares" Nuremberg 1946.

As has been surmised it tells the tale of a War Crimes Defendant, in his cell at Nuremberg, who in his nightmares sees victims from a family he is responsible for killing.

Roberto & I are still on a high on being selected as Best of Show as this is our own dream come true.

Thanks again for your comments

A very much dissevered best of show, very cleverly executed idea, well done to you both, just a shame I could not get a decent picture of it, you really need to be there and see it for real to get the full enjoyment from it.
Well done
Tommi

My congratulations to you and Roberto on a brilliantly executed concept.I don't think the photographs (so far) convey what it looks like in the flesh.I'm just glad i was one of the fortunate ones to see it up close.I reckon you'll have to go "on tour" with this one so more people can appreciate the atmosphere of the scene you've portrayed

Hello All and thank you all for your comments, I have now realised just how hard it is to photograph a box diorama. Roberto & I have completed an article on the box diorama for Military Modelling which should be in the Euro Special. It was great to meet you all in Euro I hope to meet you all again next year.

I am attaching some extra photos which I hope are a little better quality.

Regards

John

Hi John,

Both you and Roberto definitely deserve the BOS for this imaginative and beautifully executed boxed diorama. As was mentioned during the judge's deliberations, your entry had an emotional impact that simply hit you with an emotional force. I observed people who looked at it during the show. They looked once and the had to go back and look again. The ghostly images of the concentration camp victims was haunting.

Well done and it was great meeting you both.
