Nap,

If it was me, I'd be tempted to hollow out the area where the lenses are, sculpt some eyes into the sockets, paint them and then insert a lense made from clear plastic sheet into the goggles.

It's a lot of extra work, but I think the results would be better.

I paint the Austrian Skier from JMD.
For the lenses i used old colorfilm...The not exposed and developed film is a good color for the lenses. Paint the lenses white and then glue in the colorfilm

After having a look at the picture at full size the first thing I'd do would be to sculpt or otherwise fill the sockets so they're flat and even; either the sculpting or the casting has left two very dissimilar hollows!

I'd opt for painting them:

If you want to paint lenses there are two main options in general approach to making them look like glass - to paint a catchlight or to give them a gloss finish, once the basic light and shade has been done.

Nap, about time too ;) been waiting to see this painted for soooo.. long. If you remember the original sculpt was done showing painted eyes with clear plastic lenses fitted, as suggested by Tony, a difficult thing to replicate when casting. I think all four suggestions up to now are great and it'll be interesting to see which one you go with. Looking forward to following your progress.

Very nice subject,

what´s about the eye decals from Archer. I know it´s not so high professional but a try.If you hollow out the glases then you have to rescupt the eyes. That´s not easy and only fill the holes with resin or something else doesn´t look right. You could place the decals in the right position, paint some shades for deeph and finish with glossy medium.Or you could use clear resin or what´s really great work is FIMO Deco gel. Calvin Tan who makes the Figures for Alpine is still working with this and you could do amazing thinks with that gel. I think the easyest way would be paint the lences in different shades of green or something what looks dirty or like the sun came from the front so you can´t see the eyes because of the reflections. That will be the best effect. Ceep in doubt that you have to breathe under such hat and so the lences could be clouded from your breathe. I would try to copy these effect so you have no problem with eyes.

here is the link for the archer decals. Looking great:http://www.milminwh.com/archer_eye.htm

An interesting little problem. I think Marc's plan to use unexposed film would create the nearest equivalent to historical accuracy.

Perhaps sculpting the eyes first in the way Tony suggested and then adding the unexposed camera film would work the best, IMO.

I believe the sculptor was trying to show the French M-2 gas mask and, if he or she was, the photo shows an original. I don't believe the acetate(?) film lenses turned amber with age.

All the best,
Dan

make it the man

Hi
Hope my advise may be usefull, if you do not give a human feel it may as well be a machine.

The only thing that shows is the eyes, of you must show them.

You do not even need lenses, its says it all or will, but it DOES need eyes.

This bust could mean or say soooooooooo much.

Then, add varnish but tell the story first ( and in my advice-turn the head to one side)
regards

You could drill the lenses out, and sculpt some eyes on discs. Then pop them back into the holes. Only an idea.
Carl.
