I have this one nearly finished. I thought I knew what I was going to do, you've raised some questions. I'll recheck my references and see what I find. I too scraped off the Lt's bars.

I found a color photo of the very uniform (some articles belong to Meade)in "Commanders of the Civil War". It shows the shoulder boards as black or very dark blue. The stars appear the same golden color as the braid around the shoulder braids. The sash is described as buff silk, but is quite yellow in appearance. The tassles are more buff in appearance.

I believe you are correct I'll check on the stars and get back to you. I have the same figure but have never done much with it.
