Agreed on the thumbnails if it's causing problems, also I think that there should be either a wip or finished post done too, as that way they can give details on techniques etc

Playing Devil's Advocate, FOM was originally intended as a bit of fun and supposed to encourage participation on the forum. From what I can ascertain, it has actually attracted professional painters and those who are attracted by the promise of a prize, with little or no increase in forum participation. If anything, comments on individual threads have subsided considerably from when I first joined, to just an occasional comment here and there. These professionals seem reluctant to participate in WIPs, offer little in the way of assistance for newcomers and use the forum solely to promote their work/studio. It is the same old problem as competitions at shows - the choices of winners, etc is purely subjective and offering three classes surely just makes the admins task more onerous?

Just my observations, for what they are worth.

Hi Guys

Again lots of good points raised

This forum is all about participation wether it's help with questions, research and posting threads or whatever and of course constructive comments as well no matter what level of modelling you do

Steve said its meant to be fun ..absolutely , members shoukd want to participate and not just for a prize as at the moment

As for Adrian's idea of 1 or 2 that's not a bad shout ........what do others think ...limit to a smaller qty rather than 6 ...and just thumbnails ?

I support the idea of 3 categories, pictures preferably as thumbnails, but not limited to just 2 or 3 images - sometimes you'd need more to show your work properly.
My 2 Euro cents

Maybe 2 minimum 6 maximum all thumbnails or perhaps one larger the rest thumbs some works may need more than 2 pics especially mounted ones.
Steve

I don't think the amount of pics is a major problem per se but I don't like scrolling down page after page to get to the end of the post. I think one reasonably sized one and perhaps four or six thumbnails so that people can look further if they think the entry
merits a further look.

Bill

I'd go for one full size and up to six thumbnails.

What about the vignettes and dioramas competition... or do Pros tend not to do them?

One thing I would like to see is the return to the old days of picture size limits...it really does nobody's work any credit when the pics are poster size...and show every microscopic fault in the casting and painting...plus it adds greatly to the loading times...which is bloody frustrating at times
1 full size and 4 thumbs would be adequate IMHO

Hi everyone

Thanks again for the responses with good points ref pictures from both Bob and Ron

So this is what I am going for , I will do a announcement very soon , this being the main content points for FOTM from Jan 2021

1.3 category's named Standard , Internediate and Advanced

2. Members to decide which catagory to enter but Admin can move after consulting

3. All to participate in V Bench where possible , if not then explain details on technique etc

4. 6 images maximum with only 1 being full image ...if the entrant wishes .....members can click on thumbnails if they wish to look at larger

5. A virtual virtual certificate be awarded in 1st/ 2nd / 3rd / HC / C each month in each category , these will be put on members profile after announcing each winner after voting

6. Annual Prizes only ......all top 1st position each month in each category to be voted on the Best Of Year in that category

7. We would still have a members vote by Poll with each catagory having its own poll set up

8. Voting would still be for the whole of the month following the comp or: Jan's voting would run till end of Feb

PS I have spoken to companies who are more than happy to support a Annual prize

sorry if I didn't intervene, but I don't speak English and you wrote too much to read calmly. A great group this. I do not think that disagreements arise as they have happened in other locations when the internal competitions began to be awarded. This has now passed puberty and is ready to evolve. Add a category for the likes of me ... boots with holes that go badly one piece every two or three years ...

as always ... we hope google translated correctly

No real issues with the proposed format tbh, although I'm not sure what a virtual virtual certificate is
Steve

A very worthwhile change. The old format was becoming far too elitist. This is so much more inclusive.

Just wish I was up to Standard standard let alone Advanced.

Well done Kev... I'd allow max of six photos but happy with four if others are.
