Hi,

My name is Philippe Hendrickx and I'm a Belgian modeller.
I've been lurking around on this forum since about a year. Being amazed with the high quality of work that is shown here.
Although I was always very interested in figures, I also was very intimidated by the painting proces. Since I would like to build vignettes and diorama's in the future I decided to take the plunge and give it a go.
First of all I would like to thank my friend Marijn for all the info, motivation and critique he gave me concerning figure painting!

I started on an American WWII tanker (Alpine figures body and Hornet head) and today I worked on a Russian tanker (Alpine figures +Hornet head also)

The heads are painted with Humbrols and I'm using the same technique Marijn is using to paint his figures.
As you can see, I still have some work to do. (hair, eyes, cap and some other small details)

I'm very eager to learn so critique is very welcome.

THese are your first figures !!!! I am going to give up, I've been modelling for over 40 years and couldn't match your first effort ! Keep it up and let us see more.

Hi Phillippe

What is it about Belgium that produces so many excellent figure modellers/painters? Is it that superb beer? (just got back from 4 days in Brugge and I've still got a headache!)

For first efforts these are very, very good. You are definitely heading in the right direction, and with Marijn as a coach, you shouldn't go wrong.

Good stuff

Best regards

Phil

Thanks for the nice comments.

@Phil: Well, could be the beer. I do drink a lot of it, so who knows :) Hope you had a nice trip to Bruges.

I must admit that I was suprised myself about the results. I had never dreamed I would make such a rapid progress.
Marijn's demo and tips sure paid off.
I also must add that, while I'm new to painting figures, I do have a lot of experience in drawing and painting. both paintings and scale models. I recon that helps too.
Anyhow. I'm hooked now ;-)

Cheers

Philippe

Nice work. Your art background is definately paying off. One of the things I've noticed about the upper end painters is that they tend to have a little more color contrast in their figure work in regards to faces. Almost seems if they exagerate the tones in the face a bit, going from a dark reddish brown to almost white in their shadows and highlights. This renders a very appealing tonal variation and adds depth to the figures face and can help with expression.

Thanks for showing your first work. I have since donated all my figures and paints to the school of the blind, figuring they'll do a much better job than I will...... ;)
