Beautifully executed, congratulations.
Episodes like these from family history always make me proud of what our ancestors did and to realise just how lucky we are to be around now.

Thanks Mike - much appreciated. Since reading your book I've spent a bit more time lately on my figures, and keep going back to it - it sits at my model bench as a handy reference. Hopefully I'll have a chance to put up some current projects as well as a few recently completed.
Cheers,
Gary
So nice to hear you have found my book of value Gary.
Always wanted it to be a practical & handy reference, so good to see this is what you’ve found.
What in particular did you find useful in it?
Really like hearing how you approach clothing & variety you add.
Cannot wait to see more of your projects Gary.
Pleasing to have you on board here.

A very impressive introduction Gary.
Your back-story, composition, and execution have produced an excellent vignette.
Very, very well done.

Cheers,
Andrew

I'd need a few paragraphs to answer your question Mike, as I'm indeed happy the way you've conveyed your ideas with it in many aspects. Firstly - it's inspiring. To summarize, I've learned a lot from Shep Paine's old books, YouTube tutorials etc., but put together my own figure painting methods from trial and error - a lot of error. Your book had some very helpful illustrated step-by-step methods for base-coating, layering, building highlight and shade, and at some point you mentioned "trust the process" when things looked a bit dodgy. I'm able to move ahead with new methods of painting I'd probably not have previously attempted, following tried-and-true ways. Texturing, weathering...the list goes on. And showing patience with each subject until it's the best possible. Looking forward to your next title. Cheers!

That's a great vignette, Gary! I like your style with the figures, they're life-like, your shading and highlights are natural, rather than exaggerated, particularly on their faces and hands. Well done!

Prost!

Most helpful feedback Gary, next title could be a wee way off to be honest ;)
Need to do more projects to make it a worthwhile offering.
It sounds like you have essence of my approach to experiment using Plan Do Check Act mindset.
Did you see interview I did for FigureMentors Magazine - Historical Edition recently?
Adds a little more context to my journey.

I've also just started a Retrospective series over on Patreon where I'm exploring how I learnt from my MedRom & oiler days. Like you heavily influenced by Shep Paine, without whom I doubt I would delved much deeper into figures. So do keep at it.
Trust our conversations here are helping mate.

Hello again, Mike. Yes I did see that magazine you’d mentioned on a FaceBook post a week or so ago and ordered it immediately. Not sure when it’ll arrive, but I’m looking forward to receiving it when it finally makes it here. For some reason the cost didn’t mention shipping...so I may have to contact the publisher and see if that needs sorting. And currently I’m putting together a Copper State Models Ehrhardt armoured car with a crew. I’d hoped to get a few pics up on the vBench here, but haven’t had a chance. And the two busts I’d mentioned on Dave Youngquist’s FB page are done...just need to get them up, too. Eduardo put my Kaiser Wilhelm II on his Doleman Miniatures page, so it’s out there. Cheers!

Inspiration running at full steam here with Gary's interest in WW1 subjects because of his ancestor and then Mikes work and books etc coming together and resulting in this fantastic tribute vignette and then it has inspired me and I am sure others as well, that's what so good about PF, great to have you on board Gary, lovely work.

Hi Gary - FigureMentors is a digital magazine to download I think.
Unsure if printed option available - if so I’ll be grabbing one too!
I did a couple of articles back in early issue on finding your own approach too.

Cannot wait to see your CSM armoured car, big fan of these though I don’t model cannot help admire their superb engineering. I will also search out your busts as these too are special creations. Sounds like you a discerning WW1 modeller.

Look forward to sharing with us all your next updates.

Thanks for that Mike - boy do I feel stupid! On-line magazine, eh? And I checked my account and I think the "downloadable"
time has expired, so I just kissed away £5. Looks like I'll have to order it again and muddle my way through the process - oh well, I've spent more on a beer!

Drop a note to Jay Martin, editor.
He’s a good man & doing a tremendous job on mag.
I’m sure he can sort the download for you, my link doesn’t seem to expire to quickly.

Perhaps even offer an article - have seen your German Dolman bust - Phenomenal!!!
Hadn’t put 2 & 2 together on Instagram with you here.
Keep it coming mate!

Hey Mike - as I was reading your interview article, I saw your message come through (I just paid the small fee again and got the PDF file). I thoroughly enjoyed your bit, and it certainly matches your thoughts conveyed in the pages of your book. Actually the entire contents of that on-line publication is worth more than I paid, even considering I did it twice! It's funny you mention Continuous Improvement as I've just retired from 40 years with a well-known chemical company, we'd followed that doctrine for a long time. I saw some familiar work in that magazine article, not realizing was yours (i.e. Model Cellar's pilot donning his parachute with ground crewman).

And thanks for the kind words on the Kaiser bust, which I know I should have done better...but to finish any project one has to strike a compromise. But I always look forward to my next one, which is out of the box and ready for primer - Young Miniatures German Stormtrooper (with gasmask). But now I have an Ehrhardt armoured car to finish....Cheers!

Ahhh!!!
Small world Gary, especially if that “well known Chemical. Company” was headquartered in Delaware?

Looking forward to seeing your take on Young’s StormTrooper - he’s a classic done by many & timely with German AQOTWF film.

Your Dolman bust is a beaut mate! Be kind to yourself.
I like the textures & sideways glance in his eyes.
Very evocative.

Till next time…
