Excellent stuff Gordy. I sculpted some in 120mm a while back, it's not easy. I've used laminated sheet plastic and putty. I don't know which I prefer. I notice you use putty for nearly everything.

Bob, I use the hell out of them. They leave negligible tool marks, and come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and firmness. My only problem with them is keeping the buildup from accumulating. I scrape them clean frequently, but this can cause more harm than good.

John, I had similar problems until I started coating with vaseline (i.e. I dip them in vaseline before application to epoxie). That seems to minimize the buildup and makes them easier to clean after use. I never scrape them or immerse them in solvents since the former can damage them and the latter makes them brittle and they start to crack. Glycerine can also be used to keep them in good shape.

I have found that they are becoming my primary sculpting tools along with preshaped toothpics and an X-acto. I have quite a few dental tools that I will also use on occasion.

Gary, I have a few of the muskets you did for Michael Roberts. They're terrific. I think I have a copy something you wrote about you process.

Bob, I use a variation on the toothpick theme. Dental tools are a given. I have some tools I've made out of wooden cotton swabs. The extra length makes them more ergonimical for me.

thanks for the compliments,

btavis, i've never seen those before! Those look quite handy, are they rubber?

garyjd, i've tried the lamintae method but had difficulty with it since sometimes i'm rather ham-fisted it's easy for me to add a bit of putty should I bugger it up..

i'll keep the articles coming, altho some may not be directly of use to sculpting, however techniques can be useful across genres.. there's been times where a figure technique has been helpful in aircraft/armor building and vice versa..

Gordy,
I'd just like to thank you for doing all this : the step-by-step articles and the beautiful new site. Not too many members just yet, but that will change !!!
You're our hero. ;)
