Moderators ..I am sure do not walk on water and they certainly live in the real world as has been seen , it is certainly a "job" that can at times be a real pain as has been seen in recent threads.

No they don't, yes they do, and yes it can. You are correct on all three.

If whoever picks a report and then deals with it he deals with it using his viewpoint and thoughts .......are any other mods consulted if they are unsure ?

See my reply to Del above.

Is there an editor who can override a moderator's decision?

If there is, no-one has told me about it.

Is there a criteria to become/ be selected to be a moderator?

Moderators are just members no better and no worse than any other member. At this year's Euro I was asked by Tommi to lend a hand as a mod and I agreed. I just see it as a way of giving a bit back to the site by helping it run a bit more smoothly and harmoniously (hopefully without ruffling too many feathers, though I've found out that's the hardest part).

When a new member joins this great forum is he made fully aware of who the mods are and their responsibilities

Not as far as I know but it's easy enough to find out who they are. And the "responsibilities" (such as they are) are mostly common sense really - "housekeeping" (filtering out the crap e.g. spam, moving posts to the right forum etc.), answering questions and trying to keep the peace if things kick off in a thread. There's no glamour or great mystery to it.

I for one am very grateful for the work of the mods and respect their views and thoughts no matter what they do after all they put their head above the parapet

Thank you.

At times it is I am sure a thankless task

Correct again! :blackeye:

Cheers Colin and Steve,

Real bigs thanks for you both in taking the time in answer .....like you I really do appreciate the unpaid background work carried out by all of you.

PF is the forum for me

Well said Colin, right on.

In my humble opinion I think we should all relax and focus on what PF is all about: a shared hobby and interest.

And let's not take things too seriously and discuss rules and regulations and who adminsters what to whom under which conditions. Being an administrator is a tough job that costs them painting time. Let's just accept admin's decisions and get over it. How bad can it really be?

As to posting and responding to posts, let's also relax. Feeling hurt or personally attacked? Let it go. Ignoring a post is much more annoying to the insulter anyway.

Having said 'let us relax' a few times, let us not stifle debate. So I say NO to iron fist policing. We all like a good controversy, just look at the view numbers of such threads(!), but let's keep it polite and to the point, and suppress that initial six-year old response.

Allright, that's off my chest! Back to relaxing (spent too much time on the forum to still paint something tonight, darn).

Cheers,
Adrian

I want to offer a clarification. There are frequent references to democracy, or better, a lack of it, in the forum, references in this thread, and in the controversial threads that have been active the past week or so. But there should be no expectation of democracy. This forum is a privately maintained website, to which membership is predicated on observing the forum's rules, which each member agrees to uphold. Now, I can see that there can be confusion, if the posted rules don't provide an explanation for any given scenario, or if there is an object to this or that rule. But nowhere is it spelled out that we can post whatever we want to at any time, without consequences. That condition doesn't obtain at any of the forums to which I belong.

At least, I have no expectation of democracy. I expect that if I say something that someone finds offensive and reports it, there can be sanctions leveled against me. I also understand that if I find this onerous, I don't have to stay, indeed, I don't have a right to stay, except insofar the website's owners and moderators allow me to stay.

I look on it as akin to playing a board game, or even playing sports. The players all agree to specific rules before the game begins, and they agree to adhere to those rules.

Prost!
Brad

Having said what I said in my previous post, I now have to post the question, just where are the forum's rules? I went out to the main forum index page, and I don't see any links there. I can't think of any other forum I belong to that doesn't have a sticky, or some other means of advertising, the forum's rules for quick reference. We probably should.

Prost!

Let me just pick this paragraph Brad just wrote about rules, and how important they are, in order to ask what everybody now fears asking ... but has to be asked ... for good!

So, digging the dead horse out (hopefully for the last time): Someone wants legitimately to ask "is this model here [link] an original or a fraud?"

It's just this: "I want to decide a purchase, can you guys help me: What's this: gold or lead"

What can become a standard procedure? I liked Graham's idea to place a sub-forum only available to logged in members. Let's see if recent electronic eruptions can become rapidly a memory of the past.

(no collisions - just ideas to solve this for ever! See Kaz topic regarding the MG-08 to see how something so simple immediately ignites unnecessary fire)

That's actually a fair question that deserves consideration. But it is a very different thing to "I've just found this guy selling knock-offs here!!" and posting a link straight to them. The guidelines on that (which have been in place for the past 4 years at least) are clear enough - even though some may not agree with them.

Well, now that you've dragged this thread back out into the light Brian,......I've got an idea for future moderation on the forum.
I know of other fora where they employ a moderation roster.
A number of members , I dunno maybe two dozen or so, volunteer and commit to make themselves available for stints of moderation lasting an agreed period of time, perhaps two weeks maybe a month ,and rotate on a regular roster system.
That way all of us who wonder how it's done and why get to know how it's done and why and indeed therefore become more seriously involved in our forum.
Obviously this method would have to be approved by the forum owner and administrator Pawel...........and I can think of one other negative aspect of this roster and that would be the dramatic drop off of moderators after their first term.
Still it's a new way of looking at the situation.....seems it needs a tweek of some sort...........it would certainly shut the whingers up pretty quick.

Reminds me of nursery duty at the church....everyone takes their turn. Not a big fan....I stopped going :)

Brian - i suggest you stop reading as we all benefit from your continued survival.

I'm not sure what nursery duty at the church is I'm sorry Colin ( doesn't translate I'm afraid)....but I think I can work out from your comment you don't like the idea.

Thanks Steve. You see, the recurring problem is exactly what separates the thin red line:

"Is this model here [link] an original or a fraud?"

"I've just found this guy selling knock-offs. See it here [link]!!"

The end result is exactly the same! Only language differs, but in the end while no one is intentionally advertising recasting, as someone expertly said last week: It's showing the foxes where are the chickens. PLease, excuse my words, but unfortunately I still feel that if softer words are a formal solution, we still don't have a good solution and posterior eruptions may occur. Somehow I express my solidarity to the gentlemen who wish that no links are posted at all. :sorry: Suggestions, anyone? - subject is let's say "hot", but better hot today and chill tomorrow than red iron all the time.

But isn't the law working, and why? I just noticed something really novel to me. In the 1/6 Maleficent from Hot Toys, I placed. She has written in some photographs this: "Raven, prototype shown is not final, pending licence approval"

It's only food to talk ... but how worlds seem different! 1/6 enterprises even care about licencing a crow(!) and at the same time 1/9 companies suffer from knock offs.

BT - I honestly think that we should put this whole subject to bed for now. Give it a rest. It's been discussed to death these past few days and people are getting sick & tired of it (myself included).

Not everyone agrees with them and that is their prerogative. It's also the nature of the beast when you have a community of over 6700 people, opinions are bound to differ. But the existing forum guidelines on the subject that have been in place for 4 years are clear enough and before it went south, the poll I started to find out where people stand on this thorny issue showed a roughly 2-1 split in favour of not posting links to recasters among those who took the time to express an opinion ('unscientific' maybe, but at least it gave some indication).

It will always be one of the most contentious subjects on here I think, but until such time as the site owners say otherwise and/or a majority of members come out in favour of changing the rules, I for one will continue to support the guidelines as they stand.

But in any case we shouldn't be falling out over it among ourselves. Some of the crap that went down on here over the weekend was totally unnecessary after tempers got frayed, and I'm not entirely blameless myself. But it really isn't worth losing friends and creating bad blood over. End of the day more unites us than divides us as figure painters, and we're wasting valuable bench time when we keeping on going round in circles on here, and banging on and on and on about it ad nauseum. I suggest that we now let it be.
