Thanx Daniel
I think I'll be putting him in a rural setting... The eve of Gravelotte or Mars-la-Tour. More of marching dust than full on, after battle condition. Usually I save weathering the figure until when I'm painting the groundwork. That way the dirt on the figure matches the dirt he's standing on ;) We can't have him covered in yellowish dust when he's tromping through a field of red clay.

This is going to be great my friend.
Hats off to you :)

I'm in the process of milling some bases from the wood I gathered thanks to the icestorm we had in December. I've narrowed it down to a couple of pieces I'm polishing that will fit this fig. It took longer than expected but I should have one polished, stained and cleared this weekend... then on to applying a little chunk of France to the top for this guy to stand sentry over.

Cheers

Really nice work and great SBS mate, bit late catching up with this but it looks like a great little piece,I look forward Colin to seeing him in the final setting :)

GROUNDWORK...
Here we go, the dreaded groundwork.
Our man is standing just off a track through the fields approaching Sedan, September 1, 1870... perhaps taking a quick breather.

Started with a base of Aves Apoxie Clay, textured with my 'special' texturing rock. Added a few small pebbles, and a piece of root representing a small tree.

Painted with layers of browns progressing from Flat Earth to English Uniform to Green Ochre.

Veggies are a mix of flock grass and ready-made grass clumps and small wild flowers.

The base itself is a piece of the locust tree that fell in my backyard during the icestorm in December. Cut and polished by little old me, stained Varathane "Tuscan" and sprayed clear gloss.

Hope you all like what I've done with this... "Completed" thread to be posted later tonight.

This is looking good Colin, havent been to the site in awhile. Dreaded Ground work lol, I spend so much time converting, building then painting I have a bad habit of not putting the detail into the base, not you tho :) this is looking good

Cheers

Thanx guys...
Huw...the greenery is railroad flocking and readymade groundcover. I'll check my box of groundwork materials and see if I still have the packaging from the tufts of grass and flowers. If I can find the name of the manufacturer I'll let you know.
