If you look at Andy`s style of sculpting it is usually all about expression and emotion. His figures translate that "campaign"-feel very well.

That's all very well but ...

When it comes to engineering, finishing of surfaces and adding crisp details you have to take these pieces further by yourself to the extend you strive for.

Can't agree with that, sorry. If I'm dropping hard-earned coin on a piece, I feel entitled to expect a decent finish and "crisp details" to already be there, without having to add them myself.

I compare it to paintings. There are photographically detailed paintings, impressionistic, cubist, abstract, etc. and nobody complains (except for 'my nephew of three can do that'). I think this piece has a certain charm and that may be due to the rough style rather than despite of it. As always, it's a matter of buy it if you like it, otherwise leave it.

If I bought it (which I won't) , I don't think I would try to add details; I'm afraid that would create a clash of styles. Just paint it as is and call it art.

I might add that a hobby-related critique of a sculpt is something I embrace in general - not just in this case - but "if ya likes it, ya buyz it and ya paints it" and I extend this phrase to "....and ya rework it" .

Too hard on the finish, hat, chevrons, overall shape almost looks like a caricature that a face ... is my opinion without wanting to offend.
It is not one of my desired purchases.

In that case I look forward to seeing your end result! ;)

My rwo bits. If something offends then don't look. I am just thankful those out there more talented than me give me me something that I can practice my limited skills on.
I is a great bust oozing character but most of all, possibilities of what may be. Love it.

I like the illustrated look to the face. The roughness is acceptable except for the blob of putty at the top of that hair braid. I don’t see how I can possibly make that look good.

Hi Guys

There certainly isn't that in the forum info for sure

All are entitled to their comments as long as they are constructive and can help or suggest ways forward both to sculptor and painter

Andy will I am sure take on board comments , possibly relooking at this one

Just a reminder we have PM available

Obviously the master and a nice clean piece so the problem must be in the casting.

Nice share Bill. The master does look MUCH better. Although someone higher up in the thread mentioned a resemblance to Asterix and looking at it again I can definitely see that. Ditching the hair plait might mitigate that somewhat.

If the commercial casts were of that quality it's one I would consider buying. And I think that's maybe where Andy might look at improving things because he's without doubt a talented and imaginative sculptor who does subjects that others have rarely (if ever) touched. But a rubbish cast will ruin even the best sculpt.

Well said, I agree completely.

The market is over subscribed, money is or will be short and only the best are going to sell unless the reduced refinement is recognized in the price. Don't expect a premium price for a product that requires a lot of work. Maybe Andy has recognized this and made the improvements.. from my point of view it is not an uncommon subject and so it needs to be good. I am not a devotee of 20th century subjects and it is good to see something from Andy from a different era.

The Russians seem to be the reference in both price, sculpting, subject matter and casting......not too shabby at painting either....lol.
That is not to say that other producers are not keeping pace with them but the market is quite saturated and l suspect quality will play an increasing role in how money changes hands.
