French 'vehicle driver' coat color 1917 vs 1939

The reference and few photos I have give the WWI coat as black, and the '39 coat as brown, but the most recent releases of figures reverse that, brown for WWI and black for later, as I am reworking/converting French tank crew for both eras, clarification would be nice.

I am no expert on this, but I do not think you can go wrong using black for WWI. All my references show the leather coat as black. Photos seem to concur. I cannot comment on brown. I should think that you might be able to find some actual examples or WWII coats online with a google image search.
