Hello friends in planetfigure,
I am ready to start an ambitious project, a WWI vignette in 1/35. Some time ago (1.5 year) I run into this excellent and prototype theme: a Gallipoli Snipers team in a trench. All included! A base, three figures and accessories. So why took me so long to start it. As I am not an expert in WWI I and as I am doing with all my projects I tried to gather reference material so to have a better idea for the theme. The well-known suspect was Osprey Publishing. But some of their books were out of stock and I saw some new to come. And I decided to wait a while. My reference “Ammo” came at last to my hands:
1.ANZAC Infantryman 1914-15 From New Guinea to Gallipoli (Warrior 135), 64 pages.
2.Gallipoli 1915, Frontal assault on Turkey (Campaign 8), 96 pages.
3.Trench, A History Warfare on the Western Front (In association with Imperial War Museums), 272 pages.
So what we have inside the strong carton kit box. A nice big base of a trench section with sandbags to accommodate the three soldiers and some accessories. The length is 9.8cm, width 7.8cm and the height is about 7.3cm. The total number of the resin pieces is about 30. As you can see in the photos the quality of sculpting and casting is excellent! Minimal flash is needed and some things to take care (as removing the molding block), trim and fill some points (very few) and go for the painting. The groundwork of the base has excellent representation of the dry soil of the Gallipoli area as we can see in photographs. The three SMLE rifles are excellent!! The facial characteristics are very realistic and you can see the tiredness and desperation in them…There are some water tanks, tins, empty tins and wooden crate. This periscope-rifle device invented by Lance-Corporal W.C. Beech of the 2nd (New South Wales) Battalion, allowed sniping to be contacted with accuracy without the sniper having to show himself. Usually the sniper was accompanied by an observer using an ordinary periscope as in our vignette. The only thing that I could add is some bayonets and ammunition box for the SMLE (Short Magazine Lee-Enfield). Take a look at the following photos for more information and personal evaluation.
