Many of you may already know, but we have decided we will not present awards at this year’s APG Gettysburg Show. When the show was first conceived several years ago it was our intent not to include awards but we gave them out in 2009. That award was a unique print donated by Keith Rocco. This year we will go with our original idea and instead of giving out awards, we will give out another unique gift courtesy of Mr. Rocco. Everyone registering a piece for exhibit (miniature, model, or toy soldier) will receive the gift. Keith has offered 3 images for us to choose from. I'm posting the 3 images here and would like to have people comment of which print you would like to see. The selected print will be signed and numbered by Keith making it a collectors item and unique to the APG.

With all that being said I want to explain our reasoning for the non-competition structure. Our show is intended as a fundraiser for our current project while at the same time exposing more people to the history of military artifacts and/or location. Awards eat up money and manpower that can be used in other areas. There are many great shows out there where people can compete, and we encourage everyone to attend those shows. We aren't against the awards structure- it's just not our focus. We would like people to join us in a more relaxed atmosphere and get into the history. Gettysburg is an inspiring place. Being in Gettysburg, viewing the displays, attending the tours and other functions, as well as receiving a very unique gift, makes this a different kind of show. We want to encourage everyone to bring their miniature(s), models, toy soldiers, and art work and display it in a very unique setting. Every part of every show will be there except the awards but you can be part of something much larger.

Shep Paines words at the conclusion of last years show sums it up:

"This weekend our hobby took its first step in a new direction. For the first time, we as a group are looking beyond our private little creations toward a broader, more generous purpose. By the simple act of attending this show and supporting its goal, each of us became part of something larger than ourselves. It was a truly extraordinary occasion, ...."

Last years show was a great success. We look forward to having even more people participate again this year and help us in our goals of protecting our history. You'll have a great time doing it.

Mike, Well said. As for the "special gift", It would have to be the Amos Humiston image. Humiston's story has to be the most well known of all the human interest stories surrounding the battle. ~Gary

A few articles about Humiston.

I was able to talk to Keith quite a bit about the original of Humiston that he had as part of his display last year. Humiston's unit, the 154th New York Volunteers fought a desparate action at Kuhn's Brickyard on July1. a section of brick kiln can be seen in Keith's painting. A friend of Keith's told him of a period brick kiln that was in the local area. After clearing away some brush Keith was able to take some reference photos for the painting. ~Gary
