I am happy to show my latest project - flat figure based on the famous print "Girl powdering her neck" by Kitagawa Utamaro.

Nowadays we know about four variants of this print. One of the most popular (due to numerous publications) depicts a young woman in white kimono with indigo decorations. She is sitting with her back to the viewer but we can see her beautiful face reflected in a mirror. In the upper left corner of the print is placed a poem – this is a very common feature of Japanese art called mitate. The task of this poem is to enhance our impressions from the image. It says: Her curves are like slopes of Fuji mountain, golden crest is like moon and face is like snow dust reflecting in the mirror.

I should say that this was a very interesting and inspiring project for me. This print has a unique atmosphere which I was trying to catch in my sculpture.

I am looking forward to seeing the boxart for this flat figure which I am sure will be amazing ;)

A lovely sculpt!

So pleased to see more artists in the figure world venturing into the world of relief sculpting...

...a joy to see :)

Beautiful. Clean, smooth and simple lines exactly in the style of the original. Very touching sculpt. And your word introduction suggests that you connoisseur or an admirer (or both:) ) of Japanese art. It is a lovely work. Simple, but perfect. I would like to see something in a similar style, but by artistic design of your own. Anyway, congratulations, great job(y). Cheers Borek

My friends, thank you for nice words concerning this project. Was very important to catch the japanese style and the atmosphere . I am glad that I succeded in this task

Gaudin, boxart must be very stylish too :)

Hi Anastasia, I have always thought that this is the point with the large scale relief. With the traditional flat, you have to get up really close to see the detail, with these, you can see them half a room away!
A friend has a series that I did going up his stairway, he put them in oval frames and gave them a coat of gloss varnish to make them look like ceramics.
Best wishes, Gary.
