This small vignette shows a cadet drummer boy of the Virginia Military Institute on his way to the battle of Newmarket in 1864 being watched by two confederate veterans.
The students of the VMI in Lexington were called upon by Confederate General John Breckenridge to assist his army in defending the Shenandoah Valley from Union attack They marched 81 miles in 4 days to Newmarket where they were supposed to act as reserve, in fact they ended up partaking in the charge that swept the Union firces from the field.
The title "Going to see the elephant" is a phrase used by veterans of the Civil War to describe troops going into battle for the first time.
