David - I tried revising it thru Photoshop, but the original looks pretty far gone. Also when it was taken it looks like the sun was so bright that the faces came out too dark. Not a good quality photo to begin with.

It might be better if you could scan the photo at its' original size and with as high a resolution scan as possible. I dunno - maybe you've already done that. Sorry mate. You could also try The Great War forum on the photos or the War art page. My skills with Photoshop are very limited and I suspect you'll find someone there who can improve the image.

Good luck!

All the best,
Dan

Hi David, it is a shame as it appears to be in bad condition with the fading and also the fact that the faces aren't very visible.

I could try to do a little work on it for you if you wanted. Do you intend to ultimately display a re-print in a frame..??

Here is some work I done on an already very good quality photo. Although from what I can see of your Grandfathers picture, it presents a different set of problems.

Damn fine job on that image Roy!

David, you'd be amazed by how much you can do digitally to restore an image that appears to be unrecoverable. There are one or two groups online that stage informal competitions to retouch old photos and often they're even older, like the ACW (some even start with images of the glass negatives, not a print, and these can appear to be nearly a featureless black).

But you really have to begin with as good a scan as possible, at a high resolution - it's been a while since I was involved in one of these but a few years ago, long before broadband was common, the comps would start with pics that were maybe 1000 pixels wide or thereabouts; you need that large size obviously for the detail that it provides. Any chance you could scan it about that big, save it as a TIFF; I think it'll be much larger than you can upload here so maybe upload it to Photobucket?

Hi David

I think you can make two things. First scan only the face of your grandfather in high resolution and look what the scanner makes. The second scan is the whole picture in very high resolution and then you have to do some work with photoshop or another programm for photo. But very important is the scan with the best corrections with the scanner driver. You can try it in colour or black and white scan. Sometimes it is better to use b/w.

It is difficult to say more. I work in an archive and had scan hundreds of negatives, photos and negative glass plates from WW1

Thanks guys for all your advice, the original picture is very small only 62mm x 42mm.Roy if you could do anything with it I would be most grateful as , I am intending to frame it with his campaign medals. The program I have on my computer could only do so much.
Thanks again David

Many thanks Einion...it was a very good image to work from though, just a lot of dirt to remove and the unfortunate but inevitable damage to repair.
When it's scanned in very large, as you already know, you have a good chance of effecting at least some repair.

David, I would love to try to help, I sent you a PM.

All the best...

Roy.
