It's not really a painting question. How do you guys (and woman) make realistic grass for your groundwork? I've used white glue and artificial grass train enthousiasts use but it just sticks flat to the base. Not very realistic.
What and how do you professionals use?

Hello.
I usually have some of this artificial grass in old photographic cans. I put some powder of pastels in these cans and shake them. In this way you can have various shades of grass.
These are glued in small lumps to the terrain with white glue and, in that moment, I blow from one side to lift up the grass.
When thu glue has set you can make some highlighting.
Hope it helps.

Patrick,

Ga even langs Verschooten. Daar hebben ze grasmatten van Noch. Dit is gras van ongeveer 0,5 cm hoog op een matje. Daar knip je stukjes van en plakt dat op je grondwerk. Schilderen en klaar.
Heel erg mooi.

Thanks for the answers so far.
So I understand if I want larger eareas to cover, lets say a field, I better don't use that artificial grass?

Oh, one of my favorite topics.

Well, I also use static modeltrain grass.
But especially good for use are the grass tufts made by www.silflor.de
Silflor offers a full range of different seasonal grass and folliage types.
From spring to fall they have a lot of nice stuff.
On this base here I used their small pre-assembled grass tufts. Just pick them off their adhesive film with a pair of scissors and glue them onto the base with some wood glue:

The also produce whole mats of this grass. And they look much better than the common modeltrain stuff. Though I must admit that cutting these mats to fit to a small miniaturebase might be a bit tricky.

Another method is making these tuffts by hand, like this:

Any more questions?

Cheers

Heki grass is great!

This grass comes in matt form so no sticking/glue needed.

Have a look, one is matt type one is a bit of both.
