Been working with this stuff of late . Its called Kingspan which is a dense insulating foam used in the building trade and comes in several thickness's 30 up to 150 mm or even more .

Used a lot by railway modellers for rock formations ,great for carving and doing all sorts of scenic things with , takes paint well ,and glues don't affect it either as it is fireproof .

IMG_9842.JPG First one will be used ,with a 90 mm fig the two on the one base are just trial bits and the unpainted one is the raw material.
Comes in 8'x4'sheets @£15 .00 for the 30mm stuff , enough for a lifetime (y)

This stuff looks good Ron.

Barrie

It is Barrie , the only drawback is that you need to reinforce the area where you are going to fix a figure but that ain't hard you just hollow out underneath and glue in a bit of wood such as 6 or 9 mm ply and drill and pin the figure ,you can shape it with all sorts of things as it malleable ,most of what you see was broken off with my fingers .the paving was just indented with a steel rule .

Thanks for the tip, Ron!
Seems to me an excellent solution for settings.

used this plenty in the building trade, never thought about it for scenic work, great idea Ron

I have been looking to get some of this...any recommendations as to a good supplier?

Where do you live Adrian ,in the uk you can get it in most decent builders merchants IE Jewsons but you would need to buy an 8' x 4' sheet Around £15.00 for 30mm thick , you may be able to get half sheets in B&Q .
It is easy to cut just run a Stanley blade down the one side flip it over and break it's back with your knee just the same as plaster board but a lot easier as there is no weight to the stuff .
IF you are really stuck I can send you a bit .

I am in the Sutton area of London/Surrey - we have a new Jewson's about to open in a couple of weeks. I'll keep an eye out.

If you kook out for a local site thier building new homes you'll probably find some dumped in a skip.
I'd suggest asking if you can take it first though.
Martin
