Born in 1873 later after USMC training he was sent to China in the Boxer Rebellion where he won the first of two Medals of Honor
In 1911 while serving on the USS Springfield he put out fires from burning fuel which if left would have got to the ammunition magazines .....for this bravery he received several commendations
In 1915 he served in Haiti , being captured ....he tunnelled his way out !
Later in 1915 serving at Fort Liberte in Haiti he and 2 other marines led attacks against 400 of the enemy .....for this all 3 received the Medal of Honor......his SECOND !
Serving in France in many battles including Belleau Wood , in which he received the Distinguished Service Cross , also being awarded but the French also the Medal Militaire , Cross de Guerre with Palms , the French Victory medal with 4 clasps
