Looks great... I assume sculpting the individual feathers would be an absolute bitch!
When doing reds with Vallejos, I find that basing with Carmine gives a solid start for either a deep, dark red or a bright, flashy red. The Carmine seems to give a really strong base and allows a different final value depending on highlight and shading colours used.

Just my two cents worth of sweet F all ;)

Feather hackles are very delicate and have a life of their own
Having worn one 'on ma bunnet' I can say they look horrible for days
after they get wet and never look as you expect afterwards.

Thanks for all the comments guys, appreciated. More or less done with it now, started painting the feather bonnet now so will post in another thread when got more progress done.
