My copy of the Elan13 Miniatures 1/10 scale bust of Harold II in 1066 arrived today. http://www.elan13.co.uk
Sculpted by Robert Lane
Box Art Adrian Hopwood
Price £25.00
Firstly it was well packed bags of packing and bubble wrap in a sturdy box which also has the box art on it (oddly enough)

On opening the various parts were all there ( I'm looking at you Knight Models ;) ) and all safe and sound

The main meat of the bust is to all intents and purposes mould/flash free the only seams and minor pitting are on the underside where it's not noticeable at all and 30 seconds work to smooth away.

The face is really nice and well sculpted indeed as is everything else on this bust.

The nasal is separate and just has the one bit to clean off, it's going to be a delicate job to pin this, but the helmet has a lot of meat to take a pin if you need to

The much discussed axe has been moulded around a wire insert which is a great idea and ideal for a clumsy ox like me giving it some much needed strength, as to the thickness of the shaft which was subject of much discussion, now I have it I'm still not sure but think it's possibly a fraction slim but not ridiculously so. There are just a couple of tags on it to cut away

SAM_0679.JPGSAM_0677.JPGSAM_0678.JPG

The shield again is mould and seam free with the opportunity for the painters to go wild on the front, the back has no wood grain sculpted into it,but this isn't always a bad thing as the whole grain thing is another area of contention amongst folks me I like it but am not fanatical over it if it's there great and if it's not oh well. Two similar tags are all that need removing on this as well

SAM_0680.JPGSAM_0681.JPG

Finally the arm and hand again very little work to clean up and no seams or mould lines evident

SAM_0686.JPG

All in all this a wonderful bit of kit and well worth it at a very reasonable price, the only minor niggle is no base which while I know most of us do use bases from other sources it would be handy if it was your first bust to have something to stick it on while it was a WIP, but that is really a very very minor niggle in what is in every aspect a fantastic model and I'm sure won't put anybody off who is seriously considering it. I hope it sells well for Robert and Elan 13 minatures and that you've enjoyed the review.....
Don't forget I'm here all week tell your friends..... Baduuum Tiiish

Oh, go on, admit it :D

Good review, Steve, thank you. Would you mind taking a pic of mail - I am curious how it looks on a casting.

" The nasal is separate and it's going to be a delicate job to pin this " - does seem very delicate, could it have done with having some sort of pimple of a lock to fit into helmet?

On a different subject- is pedestal something every bust should have by default? Is it a sought after thing, especially as you said wide preference is to do a more custom made job. The reason I am asking is because I am looking into releasing something and I wasnt going to make anything to mount it on

I've tried my best to get a decent pic of the mail my camera isn't really up to close detail as to the base no it's not a must have as I said a very minor niggle really, just handy for painting, in my case I'll use the one the Viking is sat on when I've mounted it onto it's proper base in due course. The nasal you can drill if you are very careful with it not to go through it, if you did you could probably hide it with a little putty in any case

I was thinking along the line of feeding back to Rob - as a technical solution - if, say, to sculpt a dome shaped blob on the back surface and recess in helmet - very simple solution that would avoid ball ache of playing with a very delicate and intricate part

Putting a locating depression on the helmet to take the nose guard,
would create work for those that didn't want to use the said nose guard.;)
Excellent review Steve.
Thanks for taking the time to post,
