Actually, the grass is on Heath Robinson sketch. It’s the usual case that we think WW1 and then think mud, mud, mud. Actually plants didn’t stop growing and the trenches were quite colourful. It because we only have black and white photos which are rendered as mud these days. Look at the Daily Mail postcards from the period and you will see plenty of green vegetation shown on them.Says it in one
