Well I couldn’t resist adding some revetment to the trenches! Call it artist’s license!
I still have another German hurdle to weave and then paint everything of course. I’ve added extra soil to bed them in, which is still wet in the photo.

Glad Andy couldn't resist adding more to trenches, like the grasswork

Actually, the grass is on Heath Robinson sketch. It’s the usual case that we think WW1 and then think mud, mud, mud. Actually plants didn’t stop growing and the trenches were quite colourful. It because we only have black and white photos which are rendered as mud these days. Look at the Daily Mail postcards from the period and you will see plenty of green vegetation shown on them.
I did try to put as much vegetation on my trench models as possible but because they are centred on the excavations there is a lot of soil on view. I have green bits on all of them.

This is how far I’ve got with my Pilsner Pump. I replaced the front sphere for a smaller one and still have quite a few bits to make on it but it is taking shape now. The silver bits are patches which Heath Robinson added to his drawing. I’m looking forward to the string with knots in it!

Hopefully you can see that I adjusted the bellows to make them more like the drawing and gives me more room for the figure! I've also been crafting some armatures for the figures. I made them from a wooden bead on a length of brass wire. I then twisted aluminium wire around that to form arms and legs. It get's the basic animation.

Here's the Brit who will sport a pair of binoculars.

I think that the German's torso may be a bit long, looking at the photo. Spot the guy digging and gazing up the hole too.
