You are right, It' s gonna be difficult to get that sword (Rhomphaia) from the scabbard in that position, but let's imagine that he took off the rhomphaia from the scabbard before the fight.

It's just a painting, bit it looks like an very logical and historically accurate painting, regarding the scabbard.
But the truth is that we don't have any ancient paintings related to that weapon( the Rhomphaia) and we don't know how the ancient Thracians used to carry it.

Giorgi please get the two Thracians (this heavy one and the light peltast you have been working on lately) out soon.I want to use them in a vignette (along with your previous Thracians);):);):).
