Spain was in the hands of the invading troops, a feeling of helplessness gripped every corner of the nation. But a glimmer of hope briefly illuminated the morale of the Spanish people, it was the sacrifice of the Madrid people who rose up in arms against the French invader on May 2, 1808. Despite the defeat, the example spread throughout Spain.
In numerous cities and villages the people joined the remnants of the army or created groups of men who faced the French in a new form of combat known as guerrilla combat, wearing down the enemy's rear guard avoiding confrontation in the open field.
The president of the Junta, Francisco Saavedra, ordered Francisco Javier Castaños to form an army in Andalusia to face the safe French advance under the orders of Dupont...
The new Army of Andalusia was quickly created due to the imminent Gallic advance. For this, Castaños employed the regular troops still available in the Gibraltar field, some 16 infantry regiments and three cavalry regiments. But the greatest source of troops was the massive recruitment of volunteers, some 17,000.
Some magnificent riders used to dealing with other types of enemies responded to the call, they were the pole vaulters. Andalusian cattle herders who used a 3 meter long stick known as a garrocha to guide the beasts. Due to his famous equestrian ability, it was decided to create several units of volunteer lancers incorporated into the 3rd Division of General Manuel de la Peña.
Around 400 horsemen recruited mainly between Jerez de La Frontera and Utrera, each of the men contributing both the mount and the weapon.
"The dress of the horsemen was very original, graceful and gallant; the hat, of the so-called Franciscans, with wide brims surrounded by cord or ribbon attached to thick bow, the jacket of estado with shoulder pads and frills, half-open vest with a neck in foot, revealing the one in the shirt with a knotted colored handkerchief, a sash, tight-fitting breeches up to below the knees, with a wide stripe on the side and toggle buttons on which the bust of the king could be seen with the legend "Long live Fernando VII" ; open and low booty that revealed between it and the adjustment of the pants the blue or white stocking, and the red scarf on the head, tied at the nape of the neck, whose peaks fell below the hat on the back, revealing the long ponytail wrapped in a worsted net.”
