help getting maps to behave

Hi im wanting to use some maps and newspapers hows best to get them creased to scale and to drape for the maps and scrunch for the newspapers its 120mm scale, thanks mick.

I'd use kitchen foil crease it to suit then primer and paint to suit finish by running a wash of a darker colour through the creases and finally with maps use a white around the folds if you want them to look very used.

Hi steve good ideas but it should of put its using printed paper maps and newspaper cant get em to crease and behave to scale they always look a bit stiff ill try glueing it to the thin kitchen foil like you sugest thanks the the great advice, Mick

If it's made from paper you can crease it (fold like the real thing) then try dampening it to get the paper soft and it'll behave more in-scale that way. You can score ahead of time to help ensure the folds go where you want them to; use something blunt enough you won't cut into the paper. If you don't have something suitable already to work as a scoring tool you can make a good one by rounding off the tip of a needle.

No idea if the ink is at all soluble in water so maybe test first in an inconspicuous area. If the colour does happen to be soluble you can spray on a thin coat of matt varnish and it'll become fairly waterproof.

I print my own maps on not to thick printer paper. Then i use a mix of white glue(to glue wood) and mix it with water and a drop of dishcleaner soap(to get the tension of of the water).
Soak your map until completely whet and drape the map on the surface you are using.
It will stick to your surface and after drying it is as yoy want. The glue will dry invisible.
