I really need some help to find markings for the shield of my Germanic Warrior (75mm Pegaso). I have used every permutation of query I can think of to find proper markings for this shield on google. I have searched here and a couple of other forums. Because most people seem to have gone for a Boar I tried to be different and go for a bear. Unfortunately my artistic skills have not improved since I failed kindergarten art class. So can someone who knows more on the subject maybe direct me to a drawing or something that I can transfer to tape to make a stencil? Or is there someone or some company who makes stencils for the ancients? This is the last thing I have to do before calling my figure done. I've stripped the shield and am painting it leather brown as a base and will then go from there. Your help is very much appreciated in this.
Thank you in advance.
James

Thank you. I looked at his site as I got the Greek set, but he doesnt have an ancients set I can use on my Germanic figure.

On the drawing board but will not be available until November as I am moving house in two weeks and everything is packed away until the new studio is set up after the move. I also have other new designs to release including Roman banners, Celtic and Viking.

Cheers

I can wait till Nov or Dec to finish this. Would you drop me a pm when your set up or would it be better for me to pm or email you? I'd be interested in most of the new sets you mentioned.

I hope this comes in time to be of help. Very little is known of German shield designs. The only clues come from the shield designs of German auxiliary units serving in the Roman army and one or two Roman monumental sculptures recording victories over German enemies. These are unlike typical Roman designs and may be authentically German. Here is a selection. Colours are unknown since these designs come from sculptured monuments.

They are rather similar to contemporary Celtic shield patterns. Here is a selection of these:

[Image credit: Both come from Phil Barker's "Armies and Enemies of Imperial Rome", WRG publications. 1980. Out of print for 30 years]

The only contemporary colour reference comes from Cornelius Tacitus who describes the Harii tribe thus in his Germania: "nigra scuta, tincta corpora" ("with shields and bodies painted in black")

Hope that helps. If not you, then other painters of miniature Germani.

I think if you look through these sites and check out the photography, you'll find plenty of reference on shields and it will give you some good reference for clothing and materials as well. Good luck.
