Hi everyone, hoping someone may be able to help with Native American tribes allied to the British in the French Indian Wars(Seven Years War) and in particular body art/markings, war paint etc that were specific to these tribes. Just starting on Mitches Military Models two figure set depicting a Highlander and Native American scout and any help re this and native beadwork, clothing etc would be gratefully appreciated.

I’ve searched the internet and there are references to re-enactment groups and artists such as Robert Griffing among others. Seen plenty finished with red faces/red and black or black on its own-are these specific ways for specific tribes?

Neal.

If possible...try and get a copy of the film 'Last of the Mohicans' (the one with Daniel Day Lewis 1992)...they had a lot of help from the native american society when making it apparently...and there are a lot of useful scenes showing war paint etc.

Thanks Ron. I’ll have a look.

The Iroquois and other woodland 'Indians' bore tattoos - simple lines and swirls. particularly
around the elbows, knees, and ankles which some anthropologists suggest were a kind of
'treatment' for osteoarthritis.

I've had this on file for several years because I like the illustration. It's from a very old book
Not sure if it's any use to you Neal, but I'll post it just in case..........

Many thanks Mike. The kit I’m tackling seems to be generally based on the Robert Griffing painting entitled “Allies”. It looks like the native scout has possibly got faded red paint on the upper part of the head and forehead with some black markings but the printing process for my reference in Ospreys Highlanders in the French Indian Wars is a little subdued/distorted so not crisp and clear. Was wondering if the colours denoted which side they were allied to if that makes sense.

Hi Neal - I remembered a drawing I had in a reference showing a range of face paint patterns, but unfortunately it's specifically about Plains Indians
The text that accompanied it describes the methods of painting and colours used and how grease was sometimes mixed in which meant the colours would last longer than I'd expect and the grease also had a protective effect. Interesting, but probably not specifically helpful to you with this figure. . . . Happy to add a picture tomorrow if needed.

Hmmm.....Good point Neal, that's something I hadn't thought about before. I'm inclined
to think that face/body markings would be personal to the individual - they had spiritual
significance after all. The other thing to remember is that the marks were essentially made
with mud or vegetable extract, and applied with the fingers - we have to simulate that sort
of 'rough and ready' effect. Not exactly easy.
