This picture shows the basic colors blocked in. I want Spayd to look like he's standing in the open where there's a lot of sunlight. This painting is going to be 12 X 16, which will be my largest to date.

Really nice, Gary!

Kreston, Thanks a lot. The biggest challange will be Spayd's likeness. There is only one wartime image of Spayd known to me. The only other "image" of Spayd is a GAR medal with a 3/4 portrait of him as an aged veteran. I'm sure this was taken from a photo that I have been unable to locate. ~Gary

Very nice Gary (y)

What kind of prep work do you do on your canvas ?

Thanks Gordy. After transferring the drawing to the board I usually paint over it with acrylic. Then the board is given an overall tone. There are different ways to do the tonal painting. The main purpose is to have anything but a stark white surface to begin the painting with. ~Gary

For this tonal painting I went in and did a lot of shading. You don't have to though, it's just the route I took for this one.
