Welcome! What sort of figures do you like to paint? Scale75 has a pretty diverse range, from fantasy to historical to sci-fi.

And, out of curiosity, which part of CA are you in? I'm down in LA and we've got a figure club here with a yearly show (SCAHMS). There are some figure events up in the San Francisco bay area as well, though they tend to be focused a bit more on fantasy and sci-fi stuff. And there are the occasional seminars/workshops in the area. For example, Kirill Kanaev is coming to San Diego sometime next to do a workshop. Perhaps you're aware of some of these, but if you let me know which part of CA you're in, I'd be happy to send you more info on the events I know of nearby.

Thanks Bailey - I am quite fond of historical at the moment such as Rome, medieval and WWII. Been browsing sci-fi and fantasy a lot, mostly to see what is out there and the new releases but have not actually purchased a kit from those two genre yet. :)

Yes that would be fantastic - I would be interested in checking out a show near LA. I am in Arcadia, CA - right by 605 and 210 freeway so anywhere in LA/OC area would be easily accessible to me.

I clicked on your SCAHMS link. Looks like the next show is Nov 14th? Looks like I just missed the Oct one too...

Good call, I'm a big fan of Roman and medieval figures too.

You're not far at all. The SCAHMS show is in April. However, we also hold a monthly meeting which is what the Oct and Nov events are. The meetings are held on the second Saturday of the month at the La Quinta hotel in La Palma. You should come by and check them out sometime. The meetings typically consist of socializing, a display table (basically a show and tell of whatever you've finished or are currently working on), a short presentation by one of the members on a hobby related topic, and a small raffle. Typically every 3 or 4 months we do a workshop day instead of the meeting. This is in the same location, but we've got tables setup for painting and there will be a variety of demos going.

Also in the area is the LA Miniaturists Society (LAMS, http://laminiaturists.com/). This one meets at the VFW up in Burbank on the first Saturday of the month and is probably a bit closer to you. While the SCAHMS group is open to all modeling, the focus is figures. LAMS is a bit broader and I'd say 2/3rds of the members are vehicle modelers (cars, tanks, planes, etc) but there are figure painters there too. LAMS is a bigger group and there are a number of us who go to both meetings. They don't do a show or workshop, just monthly meetings with show and tell, a raffle, and some sort of hobby demonstration.

I believe there's also a Pasadena Modelers club. I don't know a lot about them (more vehicle focused I believe), but they're involved in running Valleycon which is a show in March. You can check out their site, although there hasn't been anything new posted in a while: https://valleycon.wordpress.com/

Thanks Bailey for the information - very helpful.

I will definitely stop by La Palma one of these days and Burbank as well.

cheers!
Alan
