Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum but I've been involved in the hobby on and off for many years. Initially, my main interest was in military modelling, with the odd 1/35 figure here and there. Then I dabbled in a few 75mm and 90mm figures, back in the day when these were all white metal and needed a lot of assembly work including pinning. I haven't done any of those for about 15 years, but in the meantime I've kept my hand in with 28mm wargaming minis with my kids. Now with my eyesight not as good as it used to be, I'm looking to get back into 75mm and 90mm figures.

My main areas of interest are ancients through to middle ages and Samurai, but if I see something appealing from another period I'll be happy to have a go at just about anything.

I spent many years in the Australian Army and studied history (including ancient history) at university, but when it comes to figure painting I'm not a zealot when it comes to the finer details. Nobody really knows the exact colours of a Roman cloak and I say if you can paint something that generally fits with the era but looks great on the model, let artistry prevail over semantics. I see history as a source of inspiration rather than something to argue about.

There's some fantastic work on display in this forum and I'm grateful already for the inspiration. I'm also glad to see the sculptors now getting individual credit for their incredible work. This generally wasn't the case 15 years ago. Without them, we wouldn't have a hobby.

If anyone is working on figures from modern conflicts and you're not sure about finer details of uniforms or equipment, drop me a line because I can probably help you out. But I won't be working on those figures myself because my artistic interests lie elsewhere.

Happy to be here and looking forward to seeing some more fine work from you all.

Welcome aboard Sapper, there are a fair few veterans on these pages so you're in good company. Not that there's anything wrong with the non vets I must hastily add!

There is always a free and friendly exchange of ideas, techniques and reference here so I'm sure your knowledge will be a great addition.

Cheers Simon

Welcome to the Planet, Sapper! Yeah, these days, I have to use cheaters (3x magnification); my arms aren't long enough to hold the work where I need to, to see what I'm doing!
I look forward to seeing your work!
Prost!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome everyone.

I might be a few months before posting any of my 75/90mm work here as I'm still finishing up what will likely be my last 28mm fantasy wargaming army (Games Workshop).

On that note and in reply to Nap, you might struggle to attract that audience here because there are huge, very popular forums dedicated to that subject elsewhere, as you probably already know. Those forums also tend to have a dual focus across the wargaming and mini painting aspects of the hobby. But there are quite a few people like myself who have "crossover" interests in numerous aspects of the miniature painting hobby, so I'll have a think about how you might attract more from that cohort.

I've learned a few things from the fantasy/wargaming side, which I intend to bring over into the larger scale, historical aspect of painting/modelling and its certainly influenced my model selection, at least for the time being, e.g. ancients and medieval, where there's a bit more scope for artistic interpretation and expression.
