Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum but I've been involved in the hobby on and off for many years. Initially, my main interest was in military modelling, with the odd 1/35 figure here and there. Then I dabbled in a few 75mm and 90mm figures, back in the day when these were all white metal and needed a lot of assembly work including pinning. I haven't done any of those for about 15 years, but in the meantime I've kept my hand in with 28mm wargaming minis with my kids. Now with my eyesight not as good as it used to be, I'm looking to get back into 75mm and 90mm figures.
My main areas of interest are ancients through to middle ages and Samurai, but if I see something appealing from another period I'll be happy to have a go at just about anything.
I spent many years in the Australian Army and studied history (including ancient history) at university, but when it comes to figure painting I'm not a zealot when it comes to the finer details. Nobody really knows the exact colours of a Roman cloak and I say if you can paint something that generally fits with the era but looks great on the model, let artistry prevail over semantics. I see history as a source of inspiration rather than something to argue about.
There's some fantastic work on display in this forum and I'm grateful already for the inspiration. I'm also glad to see the sculptors now getting individual credit for their incredible work. This generally wasn't the case 15 years ago. Without them, we wouldn't have a hobby.
If anyone is working on figures from modern conflicts and you're not sure about finer details of uniforms or equipment, drop me a line because I can probably help you out. But I won't be working on those figures myself because my artistic interests lie elsewhere.
Happy to be here and looking forward to seeing some more fine work from you all.
