Hi Daniel,

Welcome to Planet Figure.(y)

The type of brushes you buy will be largely determined by the type of paint you choose to paint with. I've painted with both acrylics and oils before so my best advice would be to start painting with acrylics first, as they are simple and easy to use, water soluble and relatively cheap to purchase.

There's nothing wrong with oil paints, and I would not advise you against using them when you have a bit more experience, but acrylics do offer a number of advantages over oils, especially for beginners.

If you are going to use acrylics, I would recommend you get a selection of different sized and shaped brushes, from 000, 00 and 0 sized round brushes, to a selection of larger square/ flat brushes which can be used for dry brushing and weathering.

As others will tell you, the secret to brushes is to buy the best quality ones you can afford. In most cases, the more expensive brushes tend to provide the painter with a better tip that will stay sharper for longer. Windsor and Newton Series 7 brushes are often referred to as the "gold standard" brushes, particularly for oil painters, however I can't recommend any particular brand of brushes for acrylic paint.

The key to enjoying our hobby is to be creative, imaginative and to experiment. Over time, through a process of trial and error, you will develop your own distinct painting style, which will come from a combination of all the painting styles you admire and like to emulate and from a process of experimenting with different painting techniques, mediums and finishes.

Keep asking questions and seeking advice from fellow modellers is the best way to learn quickly and to get the results you want.:)

Regards and good luck

For brushes, I'd stay with sable. The tips have curled for me on every other type I've tried and it makes it difficult to say the least!
