He looks really good, wouldn't guess this was a first stab at scratchbuilding. Loving the cap badge East Riding of Yorkshire Imperial Yeomanry, can't beat a Yorkshire Regiment in my opinion, I highly approve.

Thanks chaps.

Just ERY at this point Simon but I quite agree. They are one of our forbear regiments and a frequent subject for my models.

Did this one a couple of years ago based on the 1911 coronation pictures.

Oh, now that’s a beauty! I’m tempted to try to do something similar in 1/16 once this is complete

Wouldn't some thick paint be okay in that scale for the cap badge? Sorry if i'm blaspheming here.
Scotty.

I think it would probably be a bit thin, I’ll probably end up using more magic sculpt.

You could try using a bit of Magic Sculp etc and prick it out with a pin. The below is a REME one which looks awful blown up, but not so bad on the figure

I think it would be too thin even by building it up ......I would get the basic shape with magisculpt that’s nearly gone off and then pick out to define ( as Steve said ) I’d do the motto scroll first then the Fox

Just my thoughts

Thanks chaps, magic sculpt is probably the answer but it scares me. I’m tempted to 3D print the scroll and then do the fox by hand

If you can make the scroll in a CAD package do the whole badge, one for the berets and larger or the base. That said doing it in Magicsculpt isn't really that difficult, just slow. For the fox I'd suggest 2 or 3 sessions, first the body, simply a suitably shaped 'blob' on a flat clean surface, a tile or glass. Only once this is set add the legs making sure they attach to the body, again only small bits shaped with pointy things like pins and scalpel blades. Either go straight ahead and add the brush and head, or again wait for the legs to set. The scroll would be easier but take your time, working so.small is difficult, you may find you subconsciously increase the size as you work, well I do anyway. The whole can then be carefully transfered to the beret, or you sculpt straight onto the beret which might be easier. Give it a go you'll surprise yourself.

Thanks, that sounds like a good approach with magic sculpt. I'm not amazing at CAD, I'm reasonably confident I can do the scroll as it's basically a geometric form but the body would probably be better made by 'pushing' the shape around. I'll have a play and see what I can do.

Go for it, working methodically and taking your time makes this kind of thing no where near a difficult as it seems. Certainly easier than trying to do it in a one.

Cheers, I’ll have a go. In the meantime I had a bit of time this evening. I struggled to get to sleep last night wondering how to do collars. It turns out the answer is shove some putty on and mush it around until it looks like a collar.

Next I need to add a waist belt to each followed by a webbing belt. I think I’ll print a pistol from another figure STL I have.

Love it, the art of sculpting described so succinctly, you should write a book! Pretty much though that is the essence of it.

I'll have to get you to teach me how to use my 3D printer though, had it 18 months or so and still haven't plucked up the courage to use it.

I know the feeling, my youngest 2 are 5 and boomarang from 'youre the best Dad in the world' to 'I'm not talking to you' from time to time.

On the bright side I had an inspiration - I've made a 3d model of the cap badge I need and then I've used that to make a mould which I can stuff with putty to get the shape and then add texture etc by hand. I'll see how both work over the weekend.
